Abraham R. Kirby was born about November 1828, in Tennessee, according to census records. He was the son of William Kirby and Rutha E. (last name unknown). He was sometimes listed as Abram on census records. Some researchers list him as Abraham Robert Kirby.
We believe the family appears on the 1830 Blount County, Tennessee census, where Abraham is listed as a male under the age of 5 years.
The next accounting we have of the family is from the 1850 Knox County, Tennessee census. The census lists him as Abraham R., 21 years old.
Abraham married Susanna (last name unknown) about 1854. Susanna was born about 1830, probably in Ohio.
Abraham migrated to Iowa prior to about 1856 and settled in Richland Township of Keokuk County.
The 1860 Richland Township, Keokuk County, Iowa census shows A. R. Kerby, 31, a farmer, with real property valued at $400 and personal property valued at $20; Susanna, 30; Charles H., 4; William F., 2 and Francis L., 2 years old.
Abraham's brother Jeremiah W. Kirby arrived in Keokuk County prior to 1862. Together the brothers enlisted as privates in the Union Army, Company H, 33rd Infantry Regiment Iowa, on September 1, 1862. Abraham was listed as 33 years of age. He mustered out on June 15, 1865.
The 1870 Keokuk County census shows the family still living in Richland Township. The census shows A. R. Kirby, 42, a farmer with real property valued at $300; Susanna, 43; Charles, 14; William, 13; Francis, 11; Amos, 10 and Laurabelle, 8 years old.
The family moved to Kansas prior to 1880. The 1880 Mitchell County, Kansas census, Salt Creek Township shows Abram R. Kirby, 51; Susanna, 51; William F., 22; Leander F., 21, Lincoln A., 19 and Laura B., 18.
Susanna died prior to 1900. Some researchers place her death as 1898, in Mitchell County, Kansas.
The 1900 Mitchell County, Kansas census show Abram R. Kirby, born November 1828, 71, widowed.
Some researchers say Abraham Kirby died in 1909 in Osborne County, Kansas.
