Leonia Alice Scarlett was born April 10, 1863, in either Conway County or Van Buren County, Arkansas. She was the youngest child of James Madison Scarlett and Melinda N. McClure.
Leonia married Stephen Wison Bates on August 15, 1886. Stephen Bates was born on March 19, 1847. Stephen had been married prior to his marriage to Leonia. He had four children from his first marriage.
Stephen joined the Confederate Army in January 1865 as a captain. Information from one of his descendants, describes him as a red-headed Irishman. After the war he worked as a farmer and a peddler. Leonia worked for the Faulkner County, Arkansas, newspaper at one time. She also taught school in Faulkner County before her marriage in 1886.
Stephen died February 20, 1920, in Arkansas, and is buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at Quitman, in Cleburne County, Arkansas. Leonia died January 22, 1959, at Texarkana, Arkansas, and is buried beside her husband.
