Armstead Butler was born in 1770, in Fauquier County, Virginia. He was the youngest son of William Butler and Mary (last name unknown).
Culpeper County Deed Book V shows a transfer of land from William and Mary Butler to their son Armstead Butler. The deed, dated December 12, 1800 shows: "To all whom this present writing shall come, we Wm Butler and Mary his wife of the county of Culpeper and state of Virginia send greetings. Know ye that for diverse good causes and considerations and thereunto moving, but more especially for and in consideration of the love good will and affection which we have and bear unto our son Armistead Butler and for his better support and maintenance hereafter in the world, we have given granted and conformed and by these presents doth freely clearly and absolutely give grant and conform unto the said Armistead Butler 136A at foot of Arons Mt., formerly Wm. Roberts, where Wm and Armistead now live. Beginning at three red oaks at spur of Arons Mt corner to Spencer B and Jno Grimsley running thence N55DW42P to two red oaks and one white thence N 20DW104P to one Spanish oak and one red oak corner to Benj Butler line, N49DE52P to a white oak and red oak and Spanish oak in another corner to Benj B thence with another of his lines N26DE60P to chestnut at mouth of branch on bank of Battle Run then down the several causes of the said run S65E8P, S29E22P, S63E52P, N59E28P, S47E34P, S31W39, S12E6, N88E18P to a large white oak on bank of said run, thence S45W to beginning".
Also recorded in Culpeper County Deed Book U, dated December 12, 1800 is a deed transferring William and Mary's personal property to Nancy and Armestead. The deed shows:
"To all whom this present writing shall come, we Wm Butler and Mary his wife of the county of Culpeper and state of Virginia send greetings. Know ye that for diverse good causes and considerations and thereunto moving, but more especially for and in consideration of the love good will and affection which we have and bear unto our beloved children Armistead Butler and Nancy Butler, and for his better support and maintenance hereafter in the world, we have given granted and conformed and by these presents doth freely clearly and absolutely give grant and conform unto the said Armistead Butler and Nancy Butler all and singular our goods, chattels, plate, jewels&ldots; personal estate whatsoever. 3 head of horses, 11 head of cattle, 11 head of sheep and 7 head of hogs, 3 feather beds and furniture with all the rest of the household furniture to be equally divided between them".
Armstead married Mary "Polly" Wheatley on December 6, 1801, in Culpeper County. Polly Wheatley was born about 1782, in Virginia.
The 1810 Culpeper County census shows Armest. Butler, a male 26-44; three males under 10; one female 26-44 and two females under 10 years old. He was living next to his brothers, Charles, Benjamin and Joseph.
The 1820 Culpeper County census shows Armistead Butler, a male 45 & over; one male 16-18; one male 10-15; three males under 10; one female 26-44 and two females 10-15 years old. The census shows he had 9 slaves.
Armstead moved his family to Barren County, Kentucky about 1825. He appears on the 1826 and 1827 tax lists for Barren County.
Jean Farkas, a descendant of Armstead Butler, says in her notes that it is possible Armstead moved to Missouri for a short time between about 1828 and 1830.
The 1830 Livingston County, Kentucky census shows Armstead Butler, a male 60-69; two males 10-14; two males 5-9; one female 50-59; one female 10-14 and one female 5-9 years old. The census shows he had 2 slaves.
In 1830 Armstead purchased land on Piney Fork Tradewater in Livingston County, Kentucky, from Richard Cruce. Three years later he purchased land on Crooked Creek in Livingston County, which he sold to his son Gabriel in 1835.
Armstead died February 20, 1837, in Livingston County.
Mary was living with her son Allen and his family on the 1850 Crittenden County, Kentucky census. She was listed as 68 years old.
The 1860 Crittenden County census shows Polly Butler, 78, living with her son Daniel and his family.
Mary died November 28, 1860, in Crittenden County, Kentucky.

4. Gabriel Butler was born abt 1810, in Culpeper Co, VA. He married Eleanor B. Wilson on July 21, 1834, in Livingston Co, KY. Gabriel died June 1843, in Crittenden Co, KY. Elanor Wilson was born abt 1820, in Livingston Co, KY and died abt 1880, in Crittenden Co, KY.
5. Baziel Butler was born Feb 11, 1813, in Culpeper Co, VA. He married Sarah Frances Jarrell on Mar 4, 1835, in Crittenden Co, KY. Sarah Jarrell was born Nov 18, 1818, in VA. They died in Crittenden Co. Children included: (1) Susan Victoria Butler, b. 1836; (2) Nancy Butler, b. 1837; (3) William C. Butler, b. 1842; (4) Sarah A. Elizabeth Butler, b. 1844; (5) Martha Christina Butler, b. 1846; (6) Bazel Pierce Butler, b. 1853; (7) Robert Haynes Butler, b. Oct 1, 1856.
6. Daniel Allen Butler was born Aug 4, 1814, in Culpeper Co, VA. He married Matilda W. Green on Oct 10, 1838, in Livingston Co, KY. Matilda was born abt 1822 and died in Crittenden Co, KY in 1872. Daniel died Sept 1, 1873, in Crittenden Co.
7. Armstead Butler, Jr. was born Jan 29, 1816, in Culpeper Co, VA. He married Margaret Green on Sept 18, 1834, in Livingston Co, KY. Margaret Green was born Apr 1, 1815, in Ireland. The family moved to Saline Co, IL in 1862. Armstead died Feb 13, 1886, in Saline Co, IL. Margaret died there on Mar 11, 1902.
8. William Duncan Butler was born abt 1820, in Culpeper Co, VA. He married Elizabeth "Betsy" W. Hodge on Dec 6, 1836, in Livingston Co, KY. William died 1856, in Livingston Co. Children included: (1) Franklin D. Butler; (2) Armstead Butler and (3) Albert G. Butler.
9. Mary Catherine Butler was born July 8, 1822, in Culpeper Co, VA. She married William Carroll Hodge on Dec 1, 1837, in Pope Co, IL. Mary Catherine died Sept 27, 1839, in Livingston Co, KY, probably giving birth to her only child, Mary Dancy Hodge, b. 1839. William remarried in 1842 and died in 1867, in Navarro Co, TX.
