Charles Butler

Charles Butler was born about 1755, in Fauquier County, Virginia.   He was the son of William Butler and Mary (last name unknown).

We have very little information on Charles and his family.   We have been told he was married twice, but at this time we have no information on a second marriage.   It is altogether possible Charles was married and had children prior to his marriage to Margaret.

Charles married Margaret Bayless probably about 1787, in Fauquier County or Culpeper County, Virginia.   We believe his wife was a Bayless because Charles named one of his sons Bayless Butler, probably using his wife's maiden name.    Margaret was probably born about 1766.

The first record we found of Charles was in Culpeper County Deed Book U dated April 15, 1799.  This record shows a transfer of land from William and Mary Butler to their son Charles Butler.   The deed shows:

"To all whom this present writing shall come, we Wm Butler and Mary his wife of the county of Culpeper and state of Virginia send greetings. Know ye that for diverse good causes and considerations and thereunto moving, but more especially for and in consideration of the love good will and affection which we have and bear unto our son Charles Butler and for his better support and maintenance hereafter in the world, we have given granted and conformed and by these presents doth freely clearly and absolutely give grant and conform unto the said Chas. The 1810 Culpeper County census shows Charles Butler, a male 45 & over; two males 16-25; two males under 10; one female 26-44; one female 16-25; one female 10-15 and one female under 10 years of age.

The 1820 Culpeper County census shows Charles Butler, a male 45 & over; one male 26-44; one male 19-25; one male 16-18; one male under 10; two females 16-25 and one female 10-15 years old.    We cannot explain the absence of Charles' wife on the census.   Court records dated March 1827 show that Margaret was still living in 1827.

A Culpeper County Deed Book shows that on March 7, 1827, Charles Butler and Margaret his wife sold 12 acres of land to Anthony and John Ricketts.

The 1830 Culpeper County census shows Charles Butler, 70-79; one male 15-19; one female 50-59;  two females 20-29 and one female 15-19 years old.   Living next to Charles was his son Bayless Butler, a male 30-39; one female 50-59 (probably Bayless' mother-in-law); one female 20-29; one female 5-9 and three female under the age of 5 years.

Charles died prior to October 1836, in Rappahannock County, Virginia.   Margaret died between 1830 and 1840.

We have been told these were children of Charles Butler.  We are unsure of the birth order and birth dates of the children.
