Elmore McClure Horton

Elmore McClure "Clure" Horton was born November 26, 1892, in Searcy County, Arkansas, the daughter of John Ellison Horton and Sarah Jane Woody.

Clure married Thomas Harrison E. Mathis on April 19, 1916, at Mansfield, Missouri. Harrison Mathis was born May 24, 1893, at Pryor, Missouri, the son of Edward Casen Mathis and Sarah S. Hall, who moved from Henry County, Tennessee, to Missouri in the early 1870's.

The 1920 Douglas County census shows Thomas H. E. Mathis, 26, postmaster; McClure E., wife, 27; and Evelyn, daughter, 1 year 7 months old living at Ava. They were living next door to Clure's parents, John and Sarah Horton.

Harrison taught in the Douglas County, Missouri, rural schools for several years. He then served as postmaster of the Ava Post Office at Ava, in Douglas County, from 1919 until 1923. In 1930, Harrison took a position as an insurance examiner. He retired from that job in 1972.

Clure died May 11, 1976, at Phoenix, Arizona, and is buried in Mt. Moriah Cemetery at Kansas City, Missouri. Harrison died May 19, 1985, in Arizona and is also buried in Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
