Cynthia Ann Hess was born 1847, at Marcella, in Independence County, Arkansas, the daughter of Thomas Wright Hess and Harriett Johnson.
Three year old Cynthia appears on the 1850 Independence County census, in Wallace Township with her parents and younger brother, William T., age 2 years.
Cynthia's mother died in 1850 or 1851, and her father married Elizabeth Ann Johnson, who we believe was a sister to Cynthia's mother.
Cynthia's father died between the time of his marriage in May 1851, and the time of the 1860 census. The 1860 Independence County, Wallace Township, census shows Cyntha A., age 13, and her brother, William, age 11, living with their uncle and aunt, William Hess and Angeline (Roberts) Hess and family.
The 1870 Independence County census shows Cynthia A., age 22, living with her aunt and uncle, Charles O'Neal and Eliza J. (Hess) O'Neal. She is listed as a domestic servant.
The 1880 Independence County census, Washington Township, shows Synthia A., age 31, living with Robert W. Earnheart, his wife Martha E., and their family.
Cynthia married Lucius Garland on June 29, 1890, in Stone County, Arkansas. Lucius Garland was born about 1832, in Tennessee, according to census. He had several children from a prior marriage. Cynthia and Lucius had no children.
