(My sincere thanks to Judy Weber for the information she contributed on this family.)
Daniel E. Nichols was born May 30, 1838, in Fulton County, Illinois, the son of Edwin F. Nichols and Hester (last name possibly Hyde).
The 1840 Fulton County, Illinois census lists Daniel as a male under 5 years of age. The 1850 Fulton County census shows Daniel to be 12 year old. Daniel's father died between 1850 and 1860. The 1860 Fulton County census shows 22 year old Daniel still single and living at home with his widowed mother and younger siblings. He was working on the family farm.
Daniel married Mary Sanford on September 14, 1861, in Fulton County, Illinois. Mary Sanford was born January 24, 1841.
Daniel and Mary's children were born in Illinois, probably in Fulton County. About 1878 Daniel moved his family to Louisa County, Iowa.
Mary died in Louisa County, Iowa on January 23, 1880. She was only 39 years old. Information contained on the Louisa County Genealogical Society website says she died of cancer and had resided in Louisa County for 18 months prior to her death. She is buried in Oakland Cemetery in Louisa County.
The 1880 Louisa County, Iowa census, Marshall Township, shows Daniel Nichols, head, 43; Fannie, daughter, 17; Albertus, son, 13; Esther, daughter, 12; Rosa, daughter, 10; Anna, daughter, 5; and Florence, daughter, 3 years old.
