Delemore Burvel Cargile

Delemore Burvel Cargile was born May 1855, in Benton Township, near Quitman, in Conway County, Arkansas.  He was the youngest of eight children born to Nenion Elijah Cargile and Sarah Johnson.

Delemore's mother died between the time of his birth in May 1855 and about 1859.  The family moved to Walker Township in Conway County (Springfield Post Office) prior to July 1, 1859, at which time Nenion filed patent on 160 acres of land in Walker Township.  (This area is located in present day Faulkner County.)

Five year old Delemore appeared on the 1860 Conway County census with his father and siblings. The family was living in Walker Township, in the area of Guy.  Around 1870, the family moved back to Benton Township of Conway County.

The 1870 Conway County census shows 15 year old Delemore living with his father and siblings in Benton Township near Quitman. The family lived near his uncle Delemore Burvel Cargile, for whom he was named.

We believe the young Delemore and his brother John migrated to Texas in the mid 1870's with several other Cargile family members.  We believe this was probably around the time their father died.

The 1880 Burnet County, Texas census shows Dellamore B. Cargile, 25, single, working as a farm laborer and his brother John W. Cargile, 30, single, also working as a farm laborer.   The brothers were boarding with the Daniel Eldridge family.

Delemore married Amy E. Butler on July 22, 1881, in Stephens County, Texas.  Amy Butler was born June 8, 1862, in Texas, the daughter of John Quincy Adams Butler and Elizabeth Standlee.

John Quincy Butler was born February 9, 1831, in Carroll County, Tennessee and died in 1916, in Pontotoc County, Oklahoma.  He served as a private in the 30th Confederate Texas Cavalry in the Civil War.  A Confederate headstone marks his gravesite in the Franks Cemetery at Fittstown, Oklahoma.  Elizabeth Standlee was born March 20, 1830, in Eureka Springs, Arkansas and died June 7, 1895 in Fittstown, OK.  She is buried in Franks Cemetery.  Their children included: (1) Reuben Butler, b. abt 1851, AR; (2) Susan A. Butler, b. abt 1854, AR; (3) Nelly Butler, b. abt 1856, AR; (4) Tempy C. Butler, b. abt 1859, TX; (5) Amy E. Butler, b. 1862, TX; (6) John Butler, b. abt 1866, AR and (7) Wilson D. Butler, b. 1869, AR.

Delemore and Amy moved to the Indian Territory (Oklahoma) prior to 1892, possibly to be near her parents who were living in Indian Territory at that time.  Two of their children were born in Indian Territory/Oklahoma - one in September 1892 and one in August 1895.

It appears that Delemore and Amy moved their family to Florida, where they lived from about 1896 until late 1899, at which time they moved back to Texas.  Their move to Florida may have been about the time Delemore began preaching.

Prior to 1900, Delemore began preaching.  The 1900 Bandera County, Texas census shows D. B., 45, married 20 years, a preacher; Amy, 37, had given birth to 10 children, 7 children were still living; Virgile, 18; Quincy, 14; Mary, 10; Della M., 8; Willie E., 5; Amy, 3 and Prichard, 1 year old.

The 1910 Uvalde County, Texas census shows Delmor B., 55, married for 29 years, a gospel minister; Amy, 46, had given birth to 11 children, 7 children were still living; Vergil, 27, single, a bookkeeper in a department store; Mary, 19, Delamore, 18, a salesman at a general store; Willie, 15; Walter, 11 and Alvin, 4 years old.

Prior to 1920, Delemore and Amy moved to California.  The 1920 San Joaquin County, California, Dent Township census shows D. B. Cargile, a church minister; Amy, wife; Mary A., daughter, 29, single, a public school teacher and Alvin, son, 13 years old.

The 1930 San Joaquin County, California, Castoria Township census shows Delamore B. Cargile, 74, a church preacher and Amy E., wife, 67 years of age.

We believe Delemore died between 1930 and 1940, probably in San Joaquin County.  Amy died January 2, 1940, in San Joaquin County.
