Jesse Delemore Cargile

Jesse Delemore Cargile was born August 20, 1873, at Quitman, in Conway County, Arkansas, the son of Dennis Stell Cargile and Sarah Elizabeth Williams. He was often referred to as "J. D." and "Del". He had a twin brother, Robert Stell Cargile, who died at the age of one year.

The 1880 Van Buren County, Arkansas census shows Jesse, age six, living with his family in Cadron Township.

Del taught school at Quitman for a time. He moved to Morrilton, in Conway County, about 1905 and began working for Earl Brothers mercantile at Morrilton.

Del married Adella Claire Jones on December 23, 1912. Adella Claire Jones was born March 15, 1885, the daughter of John Henry Jones and Annie Laura Jackson. According to information from Historical Reminiscences and Biographical Memoirs of Conway County, published in 1890, and information contributed by Sarah Dell Fiser, John Henry Jones, born December 1845, in Pennsylvania, died September 30, 1907, at Morrilton, was the son of Benjamin E. Jones (an immigrant from Wales) and Debora T. Jope, and was a successful businessman in Morrilton. Annie Laura Jackson, born February 8, 1857, died January 31, 1927, at Morrilton, was the daughter of Seaborn Walton Jackson (1816-1873) and Sarah Adella Hunt (1825-1877).

The 1930 Conway County census, Welborn Township, North West Street in Ward 3 of the City of Morrilton, shows Jesse D. Cargile, owned his home worth $3500, owned a radio set, was 54, married at 38, was propriator for a general merchandise company; Adela C., 44, married at 28; Dorothy Ll, 14; and Sara D., 10 years old. Living with the family were Jesse's sister-in-law, Annie L. Jones, 38, single; and Roy H. Jones, brother-in-law, 47, a salesman of general merchandice.

  Del worked in the mercantile business as manager and buyer for Earl Bros. & Co. in Morrilton for 21 years. In 1931, he entered the mercantile business for himself. His daughter and son-in-law, Sarah Dell and Harold Fiser, joined the business in 1949. Del also served as an alderman on the Morrilton City Council for several years. Adella taught at the Sandtown School, near Morrilton, until after her marriage. She then devoted her time to her home and family.

Del died at Morrilton on November 27, 1951. Adella died there on December 26, 1958. They are buried in Elmwood Cemetery at Morrilton.
