Delilah Maxey was born 1792, in Franklin County, Virginia, the daughter of Hail Maxey and Dicey Craighead.
Delilah's family migrated from Virginia to Georgia about 1801, settling in Oglethorpe County.
Delilah married Anderson Fambrough on September 4, 1810, in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. Anderson Fambrough was born January 24, 1782, in Virginia, the son of Thomas Fambrough and Sarah Walden.
Thomas Fambrough was born 1747, in Virginia and died July 23, 1827, in Greene County, Georgia. Sarah Walden was born December 10, 1758, in Virginia and died 1816, in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. Thomas is listed on the 1782 Halifax County, Virginia Continental census. He moved his family to Georgia prior to 1800. He appears on the 1800 Oglethorpe County, Georgia Territorial census. After Sarah's death, Thomas appears on the 1820 Oglethorpe County census. He was shown to be over 45 years old. (Note: We believe Thomas and Sarah had a son, Thomas Fambrough, Jr., born about 1790, who married Hail Maxey's sister, Karenhappuck "Caron" Maxey on November 8, 1816, in Oglethorpe County.)
We have been told that Anderson Fambrough was the first child named in his father's will in 1827. We have not seen this will.
The 1830 census shows Anderson Fambrough's family living in Capt. Hall's Dist, Oglethorpe County, Georgia. The census shows Anderson Fambrough as a male 40-49 (b. 1781-1790), three males 15-19 (b. 1811-1815), two males 10-14 (b. 1816-1820), one male 5-9 (b. 1821-1825), two males under 5 (b. 1826-1830), one female 30-39 (b. 1791-1800) and two females 5-9 (b. 1821-1825). Anderson was shown to have 1 male slave and 6 female slaves.
The 1840 Oglethorpe County census, Dist 234, shows Anderson Fambrough as a male 50-59 (b. 1781-1790), three males 20-29 (b. 1811-1820), one male 15-19 (b. 1821-1825), one male 10-14 (b. 1826-1830), two males 5-9 (b. 1831-1835), one male under 5 (b. 1836-1840), one female 40-49 (b. 1791-1800), two females 15-19 (b. 1821-1825), one female 10-14 (b. 1826-1830) and one female under 5 (b. 1836-1840). He was shown to have 4 male slaves and 6 female slaves. Living near-by were the families of Hail Maxey, Bennett H. Maxey and Boaz Maxey.
Anderson signed his will on December 30, 1848, in Oglethorpe County. The will appointed his "trusty son," Pendleton, as trustee for several of the bequests and named son, Thomas M. Fambrough, Franklin C. Campbell and Joseph B. Smith as executors. "Beloved wife Delilah Fambrough" bequeathed "lot and land whereon I now live containing three hundred and seventy-five acres on the Oconee River adjoining Pope Christopher and others, during her life time or widowhood." "Also my negro woman Chair (probably Claire) about 42 or 43 years old - horse, two cows and calves, one sow and pigs, 150 bushels corn, 30 bus. wheat, 1500# fodder, 1000# pork, an oxcart and yoke of oxen, bed, bedstead and furniture, working utensils, the cupboard, half dozen chairs, half dozen sheep, fowl and so fourth&ldots; George Nicholson, Richard Christopher and George Lumpkin attested to the will.
The 1850 Oglethorpe County census, Division 66, shows Anderson Fambrough, 68, a farmer, $2000 real property; Delila, 58; Monroe, 30, a farmer; Joseph, 18, a farmer; Jessee, 15, a farmer and Sarah E., 12 years old. Living next to Anderson was his son Alexander Fambrough and his family.
On September 9, 1850, Anderson added a codicil to his will. Aaron H. Wilks, James F. Campbell and Richard J. Nicholson attested to the codicil. "The 1850 codicil changes the above to divide the land at his death, two thirds to Pendleton, and the lower one third to Delilah. All of her property to be sold at her death and divided between the nine youngest cchildren (names Stephen M., Lucinda, Susan, Alex, Allen, Andrew, Joseph, Jesse and Sarah.) Stephen was to get $50 in addition to the $100 bequest in the will and, once more, designates Pendleton as trustee for "John H., Stephen M. Fambrough and Susan J. Howell to attend to the above request without charging for the service."
We believe Anderson and Delilah had 14 children. It appears that Anderson and Delilah had a son and a daughter who died prior to December 1848 and are not mentioned in the will, which names only twelve children.
Anderson died prior to March 1851, in Oglethorpe County. His will was probated in March 1851.
In 1860, Delilah was living with her eldest son in Greene County, Georgia, Scull Shoals Post Office. The census shows Thomas M. Fambrough, 49, farmer, $4500 real property, $16,000 personal property; Jane A., 35; Junius L., 17; Emma E., 15; Ella V., 12; Martha D., 9; William Nowell, 16; Robt G. Nowell, 6; Vergenia E. Burgess, 12, $1500 personal property; Elizabeth Freeman, 12; Jacob Freeman, 10 and Delilah Fambrough, 70, $1800 personal property.
Delilah died about 1864, in Greene County, Georgia.
