Emil E. Elfeldt

Carl Frederick Elfeldt was born October 1, 1832, in Prussia.  He married Sophia Augusta Schultz on June 28, 1855.  Sophia Schultz was born August 17, 1829, in Prussia. 

The couple immigrated to America about 1860, bringing with them their three year old daughter.

 The 1860 Clayton County, Iowa census shows Charles Elfeld, 28, laborer, $150 personal property, born in Prussia; Sophia, 28, born in Prussia and Amelia, 3, born in Prussia.  Three children were born in Iowa. 

About 1865, the family moved to Minnesota where three more children were born.  The family moved to Nebraska in early 1870.  The oldest child, Amelia, died prior to the 1870 census.

The 1870 census shows the family living in Lancaster County, Nebraska.  The census shows Carl Elfeldt, 39, farmer, $5000 real property, $900 personal property; Sophia, 40; William, 9, born in Iowa; Hermon, 8, born Iowa; Louisa, 6, Iowa; Otto, 4, born in Minnesota; August, 2, born Minnesota and Matilda, 7 months, born in November, in Minnesota.  Living next to them was Henry Elfeldt, 24, farmer, $1000 real property, $200 personal property, born in Prussia.   We believe Carl and Henry were brothers.

The 1880 Lancaster County, Nebraska census shows Carl Elfeldt, 47, farmer; Sophia, 50, wife; William, 19, son, farmer; Herman, 18, son, farmer; Louisa, 16, daughter; Otto, 14, son; August, 12, son; Matilda, 10, daughter, born in Nebraska and Amel, 8, son, born in Nebraska. 

Carl and Sophia had eight children: (1) Amelia Elfeldt, b. abt 1857, Prussia; d. bef 1870; (2) William F. Elfeldt, b. abt 1861, IA; (3) Herman C. Elfeldt, b. abt 1862, IA; (4) Louisa May Elfeldt, b. Mar 1864, IA; m. Edward Lauterbach; (5) Otto Elfeldt, b. Mar 1866, MN; m. Anna Schaad; (6) August Elfeldt, b. abt 1868, MN; (7) Matilda Elfeldt, b. Nov 1869, MN and (8) Emil E. Elfeldt, b. June 1872, NE. 

Emil E. Elfeldt, born June 1872, in Nebraska, was the youngest child of Carl Elfeldt and Sophia Schultz. 

Emil married Effie M. Jeffries about 1897, in Lancaster County, Nebraska.   Effie Jeffries was born September 1874, in Brown County, Kansas, the daughter of Jesse Archie Jeffries and Mary Elizabeth Archer

The young couple settled in Lancaster County.  The 1900 Lancaster County census shows Emil Ehfelt, born June 1872, 27, married 3 years, a farmer who owned his farm free of mortgage; Effie, wife, born September 1874, 25, had given birth to 1 child, 1 child still living and Elda, daughter, born March 1899, 1, born in Nebraska. 

Living on one side of Emil and Effie were Emil's parents.  The census shows Carl Ehfelt, born October 1833, 66, married 44 years, immigrated in 1860, lived in the US 40 years, a naturalized citizen, land lord, owned his house free of mortgage and Sophia, wife, born August 1830, 69, had given birth to 8 children, 7 children still living, immigrated in 1860, a naturalized citizen.

Living on the other side of Emil and Effie was Emil's brother and his family.  The census shows Otto Ehfelt, born March 1866, 34, married 8 years, a farmer who owned his farm free of mortgage; Anna, wife, born March 1871, 29, had given birth to 1 child, 1 child still living, born in Switzerland and Milda, daughter, born April 1895, 5, born in Nebraska.

Carl Elfeldt died March 6, 1907, in Lancaster County and Sophia went to live with Emil's family. 

The 1910 Lancaster County census shows Emil E. Elfeldt, 37, married 13 years, a farmer; Effie, wife, 35, had given birth to 3 children, 3 children still living; Elda, daughter, 11; Mary, daughter, 9; Alice, daughter, 3 and Sophia Elfeldt, mother, 80.

Sophia Elfeldt died June 10, 1918, in Lancaster County.

The 1920 Lancaster County census shows the two youngest girls, Mary E., 19 and Alice L., 13, living at home.   The 1930 Lancaster County census shows the the youngest daughter and her husband living with Emil and Effie.  The census shows  Emil E., 57, retired; Effie M., wife, 55; Alice L. MacEntyre, daughter, 23, married at age 22, bookkeeper for the Chamber of Commerce and Dorsey MacEntyre, son-in-law, 26, married at age 25, born in Nebraska, an advertiser for a newspaper.
