Emily Green Archer

Emily Green Archer was born October 11, 1839, in Campbell County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of John Archer and Martha D. Bridgmon.

The 1840 and 1850 Campbell County census shows Emily at home with her parents and siblings.

The Archer family moved to Holt County, Missouri about 1852.

Emily married John Lewellen Chuning on July 21, 1859, in Holt County, Missouri. John Chuning was born September 15, 1832, in Missouri, the son of Robert Chuning (b. 1806) and Sarah Bowles (b. 1810).

The 1800 Holt County census shows the family living at Bigelow. The census shows J. L. Chuning, 48, a farmer; Emily, wife, 41; Albert, son, 20, clerk in store; Lee, son, 16; Mattie, daughter, 12; Eddie, son, 9; Charles, son, 9; Ira, son, 6; and Viola, daughter, 1 month old. Listed with the family are John Hammon, nephew, 23, a laborer, born in Missouri; Obediah McBath, 22, a laborer, born in Kentucky; and Emma Brazan, 18, a servant, born in Missouri.  John Hammond was the son of Emily's sister Sarah Anne and Archer Hammond. Living next door to the Chuning family was the John Washington Bridgman, Jr. family.  John Bridgman was a cousin to Emily.

The 1900 Holt County, Bigelow Township census shows  John L. Chuning, born Sept. 1832, 67, married 40 years, owned his house free of mortgage; Emily G., wife, born Oct. 1839, 60, had given birth to 1 child, 1 child still living and Ira J., son, born Mar. 1874, 26, single, a dry goods salesman.  Living with the family and working as housekeeper was Amanda Adams, born Oct. 1835, 64, widowed, had given birth to 8 children, 7 children still living, born in Missouri.

John Chuning died December 26, 1901, in Holt County.  

The 1910 Holt County census shows Emily G. Chuning, head, 70, widow, had given birth to 9 children, 6 children were still living and Ira J., son, 36, single, a traveling hardware salesman.  Living with the family was Emily's sister Martha M. Archer, 67, widow, had given birth to 1 child, 0 children living.  Boarding with the family were Effie St. John, 34, single, born in Missouri, a public school teacher and Dorthia St. John, 10, born in Missouri.    

Emily died October 17, 1918, in Holt County.
