Emma "Emily" Susan H. Bridgman

Emma "Emily" Susan H. Bridgman was born about 1857, in Walker County, Georgia. She had a twin sister who died at birth. They were daughters of Isaac Bridgman and Jane Butler. Some researchers believe that Emily's name was Emily Catherine. She is listed as Emily H. on the 1860 census, as Emily C. on the 1870 census, as Susan on the 1880 census, and as Emma on the 1900 and 1910 census.  We do not believe Catherine was part of her name, however, as she had an older sister named Mary Catherine.

Emily's father, Isaac, died in August 1859. The 1860 Walker County census, Rock Spring Township, shows 3 year old Emily H. with her widowed mother and her siblings.

After the death of her mother, Emily and several of her siblings went to live with their uncle Miller Creed Butler.  The 1870 Walker County census shows 14 year old Emily C. and her siblings, Thomas, 21 and Lucinda J., 17, living with the Butler family.

The 1880 Walker County census shows Emily, 21, and her sister Jane, 23, living with their brother Franklin Bridgman and his family in Peavine Township. Emily is listed as Susan Bridgman on the census.

Emily married George Riley Crum on September 4, 1884, at Nevada, Vernon County, Missouri.  George Crum was born October 1856, in Scott County, Indiana, the son of William Hamilton Crum (b. 1825, IN; d. 1895, MO) and Catherine Richey (b. 1837, IN; d. 1919, AR).

The 1900 Vernon County, Missouri census, Moundville Township, shows George R. Crum, 43, born October 1856, married 15 years, a farmer who owned his farm; Emma, wife, 48, born November 1851, had given birth to 6 children, 3 children still living; Minna, daughter, 13, born September 1886; Orna, son, 10, born April 1890 and Riley, son, 2, born June 1897. Living with the family was Jane Bridgman, sister-in-law, 41, born November 1858, single. (We know the age and date of birth for Emily and her sister Jane are incorrect on this census. All previous census records show Jane to be the older of the two by at least 2 years and maybe as much as 4 years. We wonder if the census taker reversed the age and birth dates on the two sisters.)

George died November 26, 1902, in Vernon County, Missouri.

The 1910 Vernon County census shows Emma Crum, 51, widow, had given birth to 6 children, 3 children were still living, a farmer; Arna, son, 19, farm laborer on home farm and Riley, son, 13, farm laborer on home farm.  Living with them was Jane Bridgman, sister, 59, single.

Emily died December 9, 1915, in Arkansas.
