Emily Jane Bridgman was born about 1825, in Campbell County, Tennessee, the daughter of William Bridgman and Mariam Brown.
The 1850 Campbell County census shows 24 year old Emily at home with her widowed mother and her younger siblings.
Emily married James Vowell on July 8, 1855, in Campbell County. James Vowell was born about 1816, in Virginia, according to census. We believe he was the son of Thomas Vowell and his first wife (name unknown).
Thomas Vowell was born April 19, 1785, in Virginia and died November 20, 1852, in Anderson County, Tennessee. He married (name unknown) in Virginia, where at least one child was born. His first wife (James' mother) died prior to 1820. Thomas settled in Anderson County, Tennessee prior to 1820. James appears as a male age 10-14 on the 1830 Anderson County census. The census shows Thomas Vowell, a male 40-49 (b. 1781-1790); one male 10-14 (b. 1816-1820); two males 5-9 (b. 1821-1825); one male under 5 (b. 1826-1830); one female 30-39 (b. 1791-1800); one female 10-14 (b. 1816-1820) and one female 5-9 (b. 1821-1825).
We did not locate James and Emily in 1860. The 1870 Anderson County census shows James Vowell, 57, farmer, $340 personal property, born in Virginia; Jane, 46; Mary L., 14 and Nancy A., 12 years old. The family was living very near Grandison David Vowell, who was a half-brother to James.
We have been unable to locate the family after that time.
