Erria Elizabeth May Hess was born September 17, 1858, in Jackson County, Arkansas. (Note: The 1900 census lists her as Laura E. and gives her date of birth as February 1863.) She was the fifth of seven children born to Riley W. Hess and Elizabeth Collins.
Erria was listed as May Hess, age 2, on the 1860 Jackson County census, and as Elizabeth Hess, age 10, on the 1870 Jackson County census.
Erria married Henry H. Harmon on March 13, 1874, in Independence County, Arkansas. Henry Harmon was born June 30, 1848, in Tennessee. (Note: The 1900 census lists his date of birth as June 1852.) Henry may have been the son of Abraham Harmon and Susanah (maiden name unknown), who appear on the 1850 Monroe County, Arkansas census.
The 1880 Stone County, Arkansas census, Mountain View Township, shows Henry E. Harman, 30, a farm laborer; Avy E., 17, wife; William E., 2, son; Alberta E., 1, daughter; Franklin Hess, 16, brother-in-law; and Susan Waters, 56, mother, widow. (Note: Franklin Hess was Erria's youngest brother, Francis M. Hess.)
The 1900 Polk County, Arkansas census shows Henry H. Harmon, born June 1852, 47, married 26 years, a saw mill laborer; Laura E., wife, born February 1863, 37, married 26 yrs, had given birth to 8 children, all 8 children were still living; Joseph T., son, born August 1885, 14, a laborer (logging); Sarah M., daughter, born October 1887, 12; Clema, daughter, born May 1890, 10; Sarah M., daughter, born May 1892, 8; Bula, daughter, born May 1894, 6; Wm E., son, born October 1875, 24, widowed, a laborer (scaler); and Jennie Cornelius, daughter, born May 1879, 21, widow, 0 children. Living with the family was Ulus Black, orphan, born August 1885, 14 years old.
About 1901 the family moved to Sequoya County, Oklahoma. Erria died December 20, 1909, in Sequoya County. She is buried in Duncan Cemetery.
The 1910 Sequoya County cemsus shows Henry H. Harman, 60, widowed, was married 37 years, a farmer; Jennie Stewart, daughter, 28, widow, had given birth to 3 children, 2 children were still living; Bulah Harman, daughter, 15; Toney Wes, grandson, 9; and Gracie R. Stewart, granddaughter, 3 years old.
Henry died December 26, 1917, in Sequoya County and is buried with Erria in Duncan Cemetery.
