Harriet Ella McClure

Harriet Ella McClure was born August 6, 1877, in White County, Arkansas. She was the daughter of William Holliway McClure and Nancy Elizabeth Cargile.  Some of her descendants say she was born at Des Arc, in Prairie County, Arkansas.

The 1880 White County, Arkansas census, Marion Township, lists Harriet as two years old.

We believe both of Harriet's parents died prior to 1900.  The 1900 Conway County, Arkansas census, Welbourn Township, shows Harriet living with the Moses Davidson family. The census lists her as 19, born August 1880, in Arkansas, adopted. Also living with the family was John Maupin, 25, born November 1877, in Arkansas. We do not know why she was listed as adopted on the census.

Harriet married (first) John Wesley Maupin, Jr. on December 22, 1900, at Morrilton, in Conway County, Arkansas. The marriage is recorded in Marriage Book L, page 222.

John Maupin, Jr. was born November 1876, in Faulkner County, Arkansas.  He was the son of John Wesley Maupin, Sr. (b. 1836, TN) and Lida Louisa Ann Cooper (b. 1842, TN; d. 1888, Perry Co, AR).

John Maupin, Jr. died at Toad Suck Ferry, near Bigelow, in Perry County, Arkansas on December 22, 1902.  John's son was born on February 22, 1903, just two months to the day after John's death.

Harriet married (second) Oliver Curtis Powell on September 16, 1903, in Perry County, Arkansas.  Curtis Powell was born December 6, 1882, in Arkansas, according to information on his World War I Registration Card.

The 1910 Cleburne County, Arkansas census, Morgan Township, Town of Edgemont, shows Curtis O. Powell, head of household, 28, married 6 years, a laborer in a sawmill; Harriet, wife, 29, married 6 years, had given birth to 3 children, 2 children still living; Wesley M., son, 6 and Pearl, daughter, 1 ½ years old.  Harriet's brother, Dode McClure was living in the Town of Edgemont at the same time and also working at the sawmill.

The 1920 Conway County, Arkansas census, Higgins Township, shows Curtis Powell, head of household, 37, farmer; Harriet, wife, 38; Wesley, son, 17; Robert, son, 14 and Beulah, daughter, 2 years old. The family was living on the Perry Road.

The 1930 Lonoke County, Arkansas census, Isbell Township, shows Oliver C. Powell, head, 47, married at age 20, a farmer who rented; Harriet, wife, 47, married at age 20 and Bulah W., daughter, 11 years old.

Harriet McClure Maupin Powell died May 4, 1939, on Petit Jean Mountain, in Conway County, Arkansas. She is buried in the Ada Valley Cemetery, at the foot of Petit Jean Mountain.
