James N. Horton was born about 1842, in Tennessee, the son of William Melvin Horton and Rachel Thornton.
James married Elizabeth Leanne Melson on May 24, 1861, in Wayne County, Tennessee. Elizabeth Melson was born about 1841, the daughter of John Melson.
James was a teamster, 3rd Sgt. in Co. F, 6th Regiment Cavalry, under David O. Dickerson, in the Civil War. He enlisted September 21, 1862, at Bethel, Tennessee, and was discharged July 26, 1865, in Pulaski, Tennessee.
James died April 1879, in Wayne County.
