James appears on the 1840 Guilford County census as a male under the age of 5 years. James, age 12, appears on the 1850 Guilford County census with his father and sister, Sina.
James is named in his father's will in 1859, to receive 50 acres of land, including the house and half the orchard, plus 100 acres of land, slaves, a feather bed, furniture, a cow and calf, a set of farming tools and a share of the money derived from the sale of any items not disposed of in the will.
William married Elizabeth C. Armfield on December 4, 1862, in Guilford County. Elizabeth Armfield was born Mar 23, 1835, in Guilford County, the daughter of Hamilton Armfield and Thankful Short.
Hamilton Armfield was born November 15, 1800, in Guilford County and died prior to 1870, in Guilford County. Thankful is shown to be head of house o the 1870 census. Thankful Short was born September 12, 1812, in Guilford County and died February 13, 1892, in Guilford County. Their children included: (1) Needham Armfield, b. abt 1834; (2) Elizabeth C. Armfield, b. 1835; (3) David Armfield, b. abt 1838; (4) Jonathan Armfield, b. abt 1841; (5) Allen Armfield, b. abt 1843; (6) Mary R. Armfield, b. abt 1846 and (7) Emsley F. Armfield, b. abt 1849.
The 1870 Guilford County census shows Wilkins Crow, 32, farmer, $1500 real property, $140 personal property; Elizabeth, 35; Emma, 7; Mary, 3 and Robert, 2 years old.
Prior to 1880, James moved his family to Randolph County, North Carolina. The 1880 Randolph County census shows James W. Crow, 36, carpenter; Elisabeth, 47, wife; Emma F., 15, daughter, worked in cotton mill; Mary J., 13, daughter, worked in cotton mill; Robert L., 10, son, worked in cotton mill; Minnie L., 8, daughter and Allie C., 6, daughter.
The 1900 Randolph County census shows James W. Crow, b. Mar 1837, 63, married 38 years, a farmer who owned his farm; Elizabeth C., wife, b. Mar 1835, 65, had given birth to 5 children, 3 children still living; Robt. L., son, b. July 1868, 31, single, farm laborer; Minnie L., daughter, b. May 1871, single, 27 and Alla G., daughter, b. Jan 1874, 26, single.
Elizabeth died between 1900 and 1910 in Randolph County.
The 1910 Randolph County census shows James W. Crow, 73, farmer; Minnie, daughter, 38, single and Allie, daughter, 35, single.
James died January 6, 1914, in Randolph County.
