James Burrow Hines Gray was born July 1, 1846, near Parson's Mill, in Guilford County, North Carolina, the son of John Worth Gray and Sarah Crow.
James family moved to Arkansas in 1850. They settled in Independence County, where James grew up.
James fought with the Confederacy in the Civil War, joining on July 4, 1864, and surrendering at old Jackson Port on June 5, 1865.
James married Susannah Farrar Woolridge on February 15, 1877, in Independence County. Susannah Woolridge was born about 1846.
James was a Methodist-Protestant minister.
The 1900 Independence County, Barren Township census shows James and Susan, both 53 years old. Living with them was William Kibbe, son of Mary Eliza Crow and John Amos Kibbe, age 23, single; James' sister, Mary Gray, single; and Armstead Rawlings, age 82, born in Virginia, who was boarding with them. This is probably A. M. Rawlings, born November 18, 1818, died April 16, 1906, buried in the Ball Cemetery in Independence County.
James died September 30, 1920, at Batesville, Arkansas. He is buried in Gray Cemetery, in Independence County.
