Jacob B. Maiden

Jacob B. Maiden was born about 1847, in Illinois, the son of William Maiden and Margaret Sellers.

The 1860 Henry County, Iowa census shows 13 year old Jacob living at home with his parents and siblings.

Jacob married S. Emma (last name unknown) in September 1869, probably in Iowa. Emma was born about 1852, in Pennsylvania, according to census records.

Jacob moved his family to Kansas around 1876 with other Maiden families.

The 1880 Butler County, Kansas census shows Jacob, 33, born in Virginia; S. Emma, wife, 28, born in Pennsylvania; Minnie D., daughter, 9, born in Iowa and Willie O., son, 2, born in Kansas. Living near Jacob are his brothers Zack and William with their families.

Emma died before March 1, 1885, in Butler County, Kansas.  

The 1885 Butler County special census shows J. B. Maiden, 35, widowed, farmer, IL; Minnie, 13, IA and William, 6, KS.

Jacob married Mary J. (last name unknown) around 1893, probably in Kansas. Mary was born April 1870, in Missouri according to census. Mary had been married to ______ Smith prior to her marriage to Jacob.  Census indicates that Mr. Smith was born in Canada.  Mary and Mr. Smith had at least two children.

The 1900 Butler County census, Richland Township, shows Jacob B. Maiden, 47, b. Dec 1852, IL, married 6 years, a farmer; Mary J., wife, 30, b. Apr 1870, MO, had given birth to 5 children, 4 children still living; Oscar J. Smith, step-son, 12, b. Feb 1888, WI; Jessie L. Smith, step-daughter, 9, b. Dec 1890, WI; Hazel Maiden, daughter, 5, b. July 1894, KS and Clive V. Maiden, son, 3, b. Aug 1896, KS. Living with the family was Jacob's brother Simeon Maiden, 69, widowed. Living next door was Jacob's brother William Maiden, 49, also widowed.
