James B. Varner was born about 1800, in Bourbon County, Kentucky, the son of Jacob Varner and Sarah Ficklin.
James appears on the 1830 Posey County, Indiana census, living near his parents and older brother John Varner.
James married Emily Denby on February 8, 1832, at New Harmony, in Posey County. Emily Denby was born May 28, 1815, in North Carolina.
The family lived in Indiana and Illinois, where James farmed. The 1860 Richland County, Illinois census shows James in Noble Township. He appears on the 1870 and 1880 Wayne County, Illinois census.
James died June 20, 1886, in Wayne County, Illinois. Emily died there on March 5, 1888.
