Joshua H. Dillon was born about 1832, in either Tennessee or North Carolina depending on which census you examine. (The 1860 and 1870 censuses show he was born in Tennessee while the 1880 and 1910 censuses show North Carolina.)
Census also indicates that Joshua married and had two children born about 1856 and 1858. We are unsure if his wife died prior to 1860 or if she and the children were living apart from Joshua at the time of the 1860 census. Joshua appears alone on the 1860 Marion County, Arkansas census. He and several others were boarding with the H. R. Hutchison family in Yellville Union Township. The census shows he was 28 and his personal property was valued at $80. We have been unable to locate his wife and children in 1860.
Joshua fought in the Confederate Army in the Civil War. He was a private in Co. K, Cabbe's Brig. Arkansas Mounted Cavalry (also called the 7th Arkansas Cavalry). Joshua also served as a private in Co. F of the 27th Arkansas Infantry, C.S.A.
Joshua married Susan (last name unknown) around 1866. Susan was born about 1845, in Arkansas according to census.
The family settled in Johnson County, Arkansas. The 1870 Johnson County census, Pilot Rock Township, shows Joshua Dillen, 38, a farmer; Susan, 25; Melissa, 14; William, 12; Josephine, 2; and Missouri, 1 month old. All four children were born in Arkansas.
The 1880 Johnson County census, Pilot Rock Township, shows Joshua Dillen, 48, a farmer; Susan, wife, 37; Malisa, daughter, 23; Josephine, daughter, 13; and Missouri, daughter, 10 years old.
On July 22, 1890, Joshua purchased 160 acres of land in Sections 11 and 12 of Township 12 North, Range 21 West in Johnson County.
We are unsure when Susan died, but census shows that Joshua remarried about 1907. His third wife was Elendar A. (last name unknown), who was born about 1843, in Missouri.
In 1909 Joshua filed for his Civil War pension in Johnson County.
Joshua, 77 years of age, appears on the 1910 Johnson County census with his wife, Elendar. The census shows Joshua had been married 3 times and Elendar had been married 2 times. The census indicates they had been married to each other for about 3 years. They were living near his daughter and son-in-law, Missouri Tennessee and James E. Felkins.
