John Franklin Archer

John Franklin Archer was born February 12, 1846, at Jacksboro, in Campbell County, Tennessee. John was the son of John Archer and Martha D. Bridgmon.

The 1850 Campbell County census shows 4 year old John with his parents and siblings.

The Archer family moved to Holt County, Missouri about 1852.

The 1860 Holt County census shows 12 year old John living at home with his parents and siblings.

By the time of the 1870 census, John was in Brown County, Kansas.  The 1870 Brown County census shows John Archer, 24, laborer, living with the family of his sister and brother-in-law, Mary Elizabeth and Jesse Jeffries

John married Christine Permilia J. Upton on August 14, 1870.  We have been told they married in Holt County, Missouri. Permilia Upton was born  January 27, 1852, in Brown County, Kansas.  She was the daughter of Hiram Nathan Upton (b. 1820; d. 1866) and Permelia C. Jeffries (b. 1823; d. 1852).

Permilia died March 15, 1874, in Kansas.  She and John had one child.

John then married Marietta "Mary" E. (last name unknown) about 1878. Mary was born January 1851, in Missouri according to census records. Marietta was married prior to her marriage to John. She had children from her first marriage.

The 1880 Brown County, Kansas census shows the family in Hamlin Township. The census shows John Archer, 33, farm worker; Mary E., wife, 29; Lizzie R. Rader, step-daughter, 11, born in Texas; Adda R. Rader, step-daughter, 9, born in Missouri; Benjamin Archer, son, 9, born in Missouri; and Laural Archer, son, 1, born in Kansas.

In 1900 the family was in Fishing River Township, Ray County, Missouri.  The 1900 Ray County census shows  John F. Archer, born Feb. 1846, 54, married 21 years, a farmer who owned a mortgaged farm; Mary E., wife, born Jan. 1851, 49, had given birth to 7 children, 6 children were still living; John D., son, born July 1884, 15, born in Missouri and Grover Donnohue, grandson, born Nov. 1889, 10, born in Missouri, father born Missouri, mother born Texas.  Grover was the son of Mary's daughter Lizzie R. (Rader) Donnohue.

The family moved to Oklahoma prior to 1910.  The 1910 Springer Township, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma census shows John F. Archer, 64, married 2 times, married 30 years, a farmer who rented his farm; Marietta, wife, 59, married 2 times, married 30 years, had given birth to 7 children, 6 children were still living and Joscia, daughter, 19, born in Missouri.  We do not know where  Joscia was in 1900, as she did not appear on the 1900 census with John and Mary.  She may have been a foster daughter.

The 1920 Jackson County, Missouri census shows the family living in Kansas City.  The census shows John F. Archer, 70; Maryetta, wife, 68 and Josephine, daughter, 23, born in Missouri, a bank clerk.  We believe Josephine is the same person as the Joscia who appears on the 1910 census.  We also believe she may have been a foster daughter, as she does not appear with John and Mary on the 1900 census.

John died between 1920 and 1930, possibly at Excelsior Springs, Missouri.
