Joseph Luther Abel

Joseph Luther Abel was born June 18, 1849, in Greene County, Tennessee.    He was the son of Hezekiah Abel and Mary Thornburg.

Joseph married Malinda Kay Green on March 14, 1869, in Cocke County, Tennessee.    Malinda Green was born about 1849, in Tennessee.    She was the third child born to Isaac Green and Sarah Henry.    Malinda had ten brothers:  Robert A. Green, William Riley Green, David Green, James Green, Ruben Green, John Henry Green, Isaac William Green, Charles N. Green, Samuel Lawson Green (a twin), and Austin Green (a twin); also one sister, Elizabeth Jane Green.    Isaac Green was a descendant of William Greene, a Quaker, born in England, immigrated to Massachusetts then to Rhode Island and to New Jersey.

Joe and Malinda settled in Cocke County near his parents.   The 1870 Cocke County census shows Joseph Able, 22, a farmer, $100 personal property; Malinda, 23; and Susan E, 5 months old.

About 1872, Joe moved his family to Texas with his sister, Susan Abel Ellison's family.

The 1880 Travis County, Texas, census shows Joseph Able, 31, a farmer; Malinda, 31, wife; Susan, 10, daughter; Sophina, 8, daughter; Sarah, 7, daughter; Linda, 6, daughter; and Millie, 2, daughter.

Malinda may have died about 1890-1892.    We have been told that Joseph married Georgie Ann Martin on August 17, 1892, and they had a child before his death.

Joseph died April 9, 1894 in Burnet County, Texas.    We have been told that both he and Malinda are buried in Richland Cemetery.
