Joel was mentioned in his father's will, dated July 20, 1818, to receive five dollars.
Joel married (unknown) about 1822, probably in Culpeper County. Census indicates that he and his first wife had a son and a daughter. It appears his first wife died about 1825-1826, possible in or soon after childbirth.
Joel married Sarah Ann Horton on December 15, 1826, in Culpeper County. Sarah Ann Horton was born May 21, 1808, in Culpeper County.
The 1830 Culpeper County census shows Joel Butler, a male 30-39; one male 5-9 (b. 1821-1825 from his first marriage); one male under 5; one female 20-29 and one female 5-9 (b. 1821-1825 from his first marriage).
Joel and Sarah appear on the 1850 and 1860 Rappahannock County, Virginia census with their children. Prior to 1870, the family moved to the District of Columbia. They appear on the 1870 Washington, D.C. census, living in Ward 7 of the City of Washington. Their daughter and son-in-law, Thomas and Virginia Bradburn and children were living with them at the time.
Joel died December 27, 1871, in Washington, DC. Sarah died there March 15, 1890.
The two children from Joel's first marriage remain unidentified at this time.
