John Varner, born September 2, 1772, in Shenandoah County, Virginia, was the son of Adam Varner and Christina R. (last name unknown). (She appears on some IGI records as Christina Rexroad.) Records show that John was baptized January 15, 1773.
John married Mary Ann Huffman, who was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Buckett Huffman and Mary Eve Miller.
John's family appears on the 1810 Pendleton County, Virginia census. The census shows one male age 26-45; one male 10-15; one female 26-45; two females 10-15; and three females under the age of 10 years.
John was granted a patent on 82 acres of land in Pendleton County on May 10, 1817.
The 1820 Pendleton County census shows one male over 45; one female over 45; three females 26-44; one female 16-25; one female 10-15; and one female under 10.
On February 5, 1822, John and Mary sold 47 acres of land in Pendleton County to Jacob Varner.
John died between February 5, 1822 and May 29, 1822, at which time Mary's dower land was laid off in Pendleton County.
A deed, dated October 15, 1822, shows the sale of land in Pendleton County by Mary and her children Christina Varner, Mary Hiser, Phebe Varner, Margaret and Ann Varner, infants (by law).
On November 5, 1827, Margaret and Ann became legal age and gave permission for the land transaction they signed while "infants by law" to be recorded.
Mary appears on the 1830 Pendleton County census. She is shown to be 50 to 60 years old. With her is a female 20-30 years old.
Mary appears on the 1840 Pendleton County census. The 1850 Pendleton County census shows Mary A. I. Varner, age 75, born in Pennsylvania. Her personal property is shown to be valued at $150. With her on the census is her daughter Margaret, age 37, born in Virginia.
