John Randolph Wheeler was born June 27, 1830, in Campbell Co, TN, the son of Richard Drummond Wheeler and Charlotte S. Bridgman.
John married Amanda Lee Smith on June 15, 1854, in Campbell County, Tennessee. Amanda Smith was born July 28, 1833, in Campbell County, the daughter of Robert Sterling Smith.
Three children were born to John and Amanda while in Campbell County. The family moved to Texas about 1859.
The 1860 Fannin County, Texas census shows J. R. Wheeler, 30, farmer, $500 personal property; A. L., 27; Sarah E., 5, b. TN and Thomas J., 3, b. TN. Listed with the family was H. Ridenour, 21, b. TN.
John and Amanda's son Richard died between about 1861 and 1869, in Fannin County.
The 1870 Fannin County census shows John Wheeler, 40, farmer, $1000 real property, $700 personal property; Amanda, 37; Sarah E., 15; Thomas, 13, works on farm, b. TN; Josephine, 6, b. TX; Charlotte, 3, b. TX and Louisa B., 2, b. TX.
John Wheeler died November 7, 1875, in Fannin County.
The 1880 Fannin County census shows L. Wheeler, 46, widow; P. J., 16, daughter; M. C., 14, daughter; L. B., 12, daughter and T. J., 24, son, laborer on farm.
In 1900 Amanda was living with her son Thomas and his family. The 1900 Montague County, Texas census shows Thomas J. Wheeler, b. Dec 1857, 42, m. 15 yrs, farmer who rented his farm, b. TN; Moline A., wife, b. Dec 1867, 32, m. 15 yrs, had given birth to 5 children, 5 children were still living, b. TN; Elmer, son, b. Nov 1881, 18, b. TX, father b. TN, mother b. MO, farm laborer; Ordie, daughter, b. Nov 1886, 13, b. in TX, father & mother b. TN; Annie, daughter, June 1889, 10, TX, TN, TN; Willie, daughter, Dec 1891, 8, TX, TN, TN; Bertie, daughter, Nov 1894, 5, TX, TN, TN; John, son, Aug 1897, 2, TX, TN, TN and Amanda Wheeler, mother, July 1835, 64, widow, had given birth to 6 children, 5 children were still living.
The 1910 census shows Amanda in the home of her daughter Charlotte and her family. The 1910 Montague County census shows Columbus M. Griggs, 52, m. 1 time for 30 yrs, farmer who rented his farm; Charlie M., wife, 43, m. 1 time for 30 yrs, had given birth to 12 children, 10 children were still living; Leonard O., son, 20, farm laborer; Fannie L., daughter, 16; Lottie B., daughter, 14; Maude M., daughter, 12; Jesse T., son, 11; Walter A., son, 9; Robert L., son, 6; Foster, son, 4 and Emanzy L, mother-in-law, 75, widow.
In 1920 Amanda was living in the home of her daughter Louisa and her family. The 1920 Wise County, Texas census shows William C. Nichols, owned his property free of mortgage, 59, farmer; Louisa B., wife, 51; Georgia L., daughter, 19; Claud O., son, 17; Willie B., daughter, 14; Knox F., son, 5 and Amanda L. Wheeler, mother-in-law, 83.
Amanda died April 30, 1921, in Fannin County.
