John Washington Crow was born January 23, 1883, at Cave City, in Independence County, Arkansas, the son of Thomas Jefferson "Jeff" Crow and Arena "Renie" Green.
John's family moved to near Scotland, in Van Buren County, Arkansas, between 1893 and 1898.
John had polio when he was a child and it left him paralized from the waist down. John adapted to his handicap, however, and never let it stop him from doing anything he really wanted to do.
In order to ride his horse, John devised a winch and rope, with which he was able to pull himself up into the saddle. He later drove a car, which he controlled with rods to operate the gas, brake and clutch.
In the early 1900's, John served as Tax Assessor in Van Buren County. He also sold Aetna Insurance for many years.
The 1930 Van Buren County census, Craig Township, shows John W. Crow, 47, single, an insurance agent, living with his parents and sister Effie.
John never married. He died December 13, 1945, and is buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, near Scotland, in Van Buren County.
