John W. Hess

John W. Hess was born April 2, 1839, in Independence County, Arkansas.    He was the son of James Samuel Hess and Elizabeth Wells.

John appears on the 1840 Independence County census, Washington Township, with his family.    He was shown to be under the age of 5 years.  

John W. Hess, age 10, appears on the 1850 Newton County, Arkansas, Jackson Township census with his parents and five of his siblings.

The 1860 Pope County, Arkansas census shows 21 year old John W., a farmer, living in North Fork Township with his parents and eight of his siblings.     

John married Elizabeth Cottrell on April 4, 1867, in Arkansas.    Elizabeth Cottrell was born March 15, 1851, in Arkansas, the daughter of Gilbert Cottrell and Vashti (maiden name unknown).

The 1870 Izard County, Arkansas, census shows John, age 29, and Elizabeth, age 19, living in Richwood Township, Riggville Post Office, with their 2 year old son Gilbert and 6 month old daughter Leana.    Living with the family was Elizabeth's mother, Vashti Cottrell, age 50, born in Tennessee.    John was shown to have real estate valued at $2500 and personal property valued at $1600.    He was a farmer.

The 1880 Stone County, Arkansas, census shows John W. Hess, 38, a farmer; Elizabeth, 28; Gilbert, 12, son, a farm laborer; Lena, 10, daughter; James, 8, son; Nancy, 5, daughter; John, 2, son; Violet Cottrill, 70, mother, born in Tennessee, and Joseph Hess, 45, uncle, a farm laborer.    Living in the same area was the family of John Hess, son of Isaac Brookfield Hess.

The 1900 Stone County census shows the family still living in Richwoods Township.    The census shows John W. Hess, born April 1840, 60, married 33 years, a farmer who owned his farm; Lizzie, wife, born March 1852, 48, married 33 years, had given birth to 7 children, 7 children were still living; John B., son, born May 1878, 22, a farmer; Sam G., son, born December 1880, 19, a farm laborer; and Robie, daughter, born April 1895, 5 years old.    Living in the same household was their son James and his family.  

The 1910 Stone County census, Richwoods Township, shows John W. Hess, 71, married 43 years, a retired farmer who owned his farm; Elizabeth, wife, 58, 1, had given birth to 7 children, all of them still living; Samuel, son, 29, single, a farmer; and Robbie, daughter, 15 years old.    Living next to them was their son James and his family.  

John died March 31, 1919, in Stone County.    Elizabeth died there on December 6, 1923.   They are buried in Case Cemetery (aka East Richwoods Cemetery), in Stone County.

Nancy "Tennie" Cullom on Feb 22, 1894, in Stone Co, AR.    The family appears on the 1900 and 1910 Stone Co, AR census.    The 1910 census shows Nancy had given birth to 6 children and all 6 were still living.    Their children, all born in Stone Co, were: (1) Myrtle P. Hess, b. Jan 1895; (2) Ray Hess, b. Aug 1896; (3) Mable Hess, b. Aug 1898; (4) Myrtie B. Hess, b. 1902; (5) Georgia Lee Hess, b. 1905 and (6) Lois Hess, b. 1908

5. John B. Hess, b. May 9, 1878, Stone Co, AR; m. Gertrude (Lancaster) Knight on Mar 6, 1938, in Stone Co
