Martha Nuell Archer

Martha Nuell Archer was born August 20, 1841, at Jacksboro, in Campbell County, Tennessee, the daughter of John Archer and Martha D. Bridgmon.

The 1850 Campbell County census shows 8 year old Martha with her parents and siblings.

The Archer family moved to Holt County, Missouri about 1852.

The 1860 Holt County, Missouri cenus shows 19 year old Martha at home with her parents and siblings.  

The 1870 Holt County census shows Martha A. Archer, 26, living in the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Emily and John Chuning and children in Dallas Township. 

It appears that about 1873, Martha had a son.  Since she used the name Archer on every census after that time, we assume the child was born out of wedlock.  A few researchers say Martha married a Jackson in Kansas City, Missouri, but the census reflects the boy used the Archer surname. 

The 1880 Holt County census, town of Bigelow shows Martha Archer, 37, dress maker and J. P. Archer, son, 7 years old, born in Missouri, father born in Virginia, mother born in Tennessee. Boarding with the family were M. A. Moore, 25, a laborer, born in Missouri; W. W. Horner, 21, a laborer, born in Ohio; C. W. Brigham, 23, a farmer, born in New York; Franklin Hill, 24, a stone mason, born in Indiana; Josiah Rene, 27, a farmer, born in Missouri; and J. W. Crume, 25, a plasterer, born in Missouri.  Living next door to Martha was her brother, David Archer, 26, a laborer, born in Tennessee.

We believe Martha's son died prior to 1900.  The 1900 Buchanan County, Missouri census shows Martha living in St. Joseph.  The census shows Martha Archer, head, born August 1840, 59, widow, had no living children, keeper of a lodging house.  Several people were boarding with her.  Boarding with a family living next door was her nephew, John Archer, born November 1861, 39, single, a collector.  John was the son of Martha's brother William Argyle Archer. 

The 1910 Holt County census shows Martha living in the home of her sister Emily G. Chuning, 70, widowed.  The census shows Martha M. Archer, sister, 67, widowed, had given birth to 1 child, no children were still living.

Martha died March 15, 1912, in Holt County, Missouri.
