Margaret Jane Abel

Margaret Jane Abel was born 1833, in Greene County, Tennessee.    She was the daughter of Jonathan Abel and Catherine Cleaver.

Margaret, age 17, appears on the 1850 Greene County census with her widowed father and her siblings, Joseph, 19 and Aurelius, age 14 years.

Margaret married John Hucks on September 3, 1852, in Greene County.    John Hucks (often spelled Hux on census and other records) was born about 1831, in Tennessee or North Carolina.

 The couple moved to Keokuk County, Iowa soon after their marriage.    The 1856 Keokuk Co, IA, Jackson Twp, Special Census shows John Hux, 25, lived in state 3 yrs, laborer; and Margaret J., 23, lived in state 3 yrs.     They were living beside Margaret's brother Joseph Abel and his family.    Margaret's father, Jonathan Abel, 71, widowed, was living with Joseph's family.

The 1860 Keokuk County census, Jackson Township, shows John Hux, 30, day laborer, $100 real property, $50 personal property; Jane, 26; and Runny (or Ronny?) T., 2 years old.     They were living near Margaret's sisters Elizabeth Ingle and her family, Mary Hinkle and her family, and Margaret's brother, Joseph Abel and his family. 

John Hucks enlisted in Company B, Iowa 33rd Infantry Regiment, Union Army, on September 1, 1862.    The enlistment papers said he was living at Ioka, Iowa.   John mustered out on December 4,  1863 at Davenport, Iowa.

 The 1870 Keokuk County, Jackson Township census shows Jno Hix, 40, farmer, $300 real property, $250 personal property; Margaret, 37; son, R. T., 12; Joseph, 10; Mary, 7; Jno H., 2, and a daughter whose name looked like Charlott, 1 month old, born in May.

Margaret died in Keokuk County between the time of the 1870 census and about 1875.  

John married again about 1876.    His second wife was also named Margaret.    She was born about 1850, in Kentucky according to the 1880 census.  

The 1880 Keokuk County, Jackson Township census shows John Hux, 50, farmer; Margaret, 30, wife, KY; Taylor, 22, son, laborer; John, 14, son; Ann, 12, daughter; William, 3, son; and Elliot, 8 months old, born in November.    The census shows that Taylor, John and Ann's mother was born in Tennessee, but that William and Elliot's mother was born in Kentucky. 

John Hux died in 1884, in Keokuk County.    He is buried in Richland Cemetery in Keokuk County.
