Marquis "Mark" Daniel Lafayette Wheeler was born April 6, 1837, in Campbell County, Tennessee, the son of Richard Drummond Wheeler and Charlotte S. Bridgman.
The 1850 and 1860 Campbell County census records show Mark at home with his parents and siblings.
Goodspeed's History of Campbell County, Tennessee, 1887, relates that Mark "grew up accustomed to the advantages and disadvantages of rural life, and served as a Federal soldier throughout the war".
Marquis married Sarah E. Hunter about 1866. Sarah Hunter was born June 9, 1848, in Tennessee, the daughter of Squire Hunter and Frances "Fannie" Dabney.
Squire Hunter was born February 24, 1827, in Tennessee and died February 17, 1893, in Campbell County. Fannie Dabney was born about 1818, in Virginia and died December 11, 1880, in Campbell County. Their children included: (1) Sarah E. Hunter, b. 1848; (2) Tabitha Annie Hunter, b. Jan 24, 1850, m. Hugh Luther Wheeler (Mark's brother); (3) James F. Hunter, b. Aug 22, 1852, TN; d. Mar 31, 1872 and (4) Nancy C. Hunter, b. Feb 16, 1855, TN; d. Sept 10, 1863, TN.
Mark and Sarah had only a short time together, however. Sarah died July 29, 1869, in Campbell County.
The 1870 Campbell County census shows Mark living back at home with his parents and working as a clerk in a store. His two children were living with their grandparents, Squire and Fannie Hunter. Census records reflect that Squire and Fannie Hunter raised these two grandchildren. Also listed with the Hunters on the 1870 census was Mark's brother, Hugh Luther Wheeler, who later married Sarah's sister, Annie.
Mark married Emma J. Hoss on September 23, 1875, in Campbell County. Emma Hoss was born July 2, 1855, in Tennessee, the daughter of Landon Carter Hoss (b. 1817; d. 1891) and Lauretta P. Boren (b. 1825; d. 1893).
The 1880 Campbell County, Tennessee census, Careyville Township, shows M. D. Wheeler, 42, a merchant; Emma, wife, 25; R. E., son, 2; and J. H., son, 6 months old. Also living with the family was J. E. Wheeler, 31, a depot agent. (J. E. Wheeler was Mark's brother Joseph E. Wheeler.)
The 1880 Campbell County census, Knoxville Township, shows Mark and Sarah's two children living with their grandparents. The census shows Squire Hunter, 52, running a livery stable; Fannie, wife, 52; J. D. Wheeler, grandson, 13; and Annie B. Wheeler, granddaughter, 12. Fannie Hunter died in December of 1880.
Goodspeed's History of Campbell County, Tennessee, 1887, further relates that in 1887, Mark owned and cultivated 360 acres, and was "a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, a Master Mason and K. of H".
Mark died January 7, 1892, in Campbell County and is buried in the Wheeler Cemetery at Careyville, in Campbell County. Emma died December 6, 1937.
