Mary Abel

Mary Abel was born in 1817, in Tennessee, the daughter of Jonathan Abel and Catherine Cleaver.

Mary's family moved from Wythe County, Virginia, to Tennessee, about 1813 and settled in Greene County. 

Mary married George Hinkle on October 25, 1838, in Greene County, Tennessee.    George Hinkle was born July 1814, in Tennessee. 

The 1840 Greene County, Tennessee census shows George Hinkle, a male 20-29; and one female (Mary) 20-29 years of age.    They were living next to Mary's parents.

Prior to 1848, the family moved to Keokuk County, Iowa.    The 1850 Keokuk County census, Jackson Township, shows George Hinkle, 36, farmer; Mary, 33; Catharine, 9; and Elias, 2 years old.

The 1860 Keokuk County, Jackson Township, census shows George Hinkle, 46, farmer, $1200 real property, $200 personal property; Mary, 41; and Elias, 12 years old.    The family was living near the families of Mary's brother Joseph Abel and her sister Elizabeth Ingle.  

    The 1870 Keokuk County census, Jackson Township, shows Geo Hinkle, 58, farmer; Mary, 52; Elias, 22, farm laborer; Sarah, 22; Geo W., 1; and Mary, 6-months old, born in December.

The 1880 Keokuk County census, Jackson Township, shows George Hinkle, 66, farmer; and Mary, 63, wife.    Living next to them was Elias Hinkle, 32, laborer; Sarah, 32, wife; George, 11, son; Mary, 10, daughter; Charles, 8, son; Samuel, 4, son; and Nellie, 2, daughter. 

Mary died prior to 1895, in Jackson Township, Keokuk County, Iowa.     The 1895 Keokuk County Special Census shows George Hinkle, 80, living alone in Jackson Township.  

The 1900 Keokuk County, Jackson Township, census shows Elias Hinkle, born Aug 1848, 51, married 32 years, farmer; Sarah R., wife, born Aug 1848, 51, married 32 years, had given birth to 9 children, 7 children were still living; Virgil, son, born Feb 1886, 14, farm laborer; and George Hinkle, father, born July 1814, 85, widowed. 

George Hinkle died in Keokuk County prior to 1910.
