Mattie Izora Jones was born June 1880, in Faulkner County, Arkansas, the daughter of Dockery Berry Giddens Jones and his second wife, Sarah Jane Edwards.
We believe Mattie's mother died when Mattie was about six years old. Her father then married her mother's sister. The family moved to White County, Arkansas, prior to 1889. Prior to 1900 the family moved to Culpepper Township in Van Buren County, Arkansas.
The 1900 Van Buren County census shows Mattie, age 19, boarding with Jasper Hardin and his wife Rebecca, in Culpepper Township. Jasper N. Hardin was born February 1857, in Missouri, and Rebecca was born May 1850, in North Carolina. The couple had no children according to the census.
The 1910 Van Buren County census shows Mattie, age 28, still boarding with Jasper and Rebecca Hardin, in Culpepper Township. Rebecca Hardin died in late 1910.
Mattie married Jasper N. Hardin on February 5, 1911, in Van Buren County. Jasper was 54 and Mattie was 31.
Jasper and Mattie had no children. Mattie's half-sister, Eliza Jones, who married D. B. McClure, died February 24, 1913, and left several small children. D. B. remarried in 1915, but the children soon left home to live with other family members. D. B. and Eliza's youngest daughter, Susie Izora McClure, who was named for her Aunt Mattie, lived with Jasper and Mattie for a time. Jasper died before Mattie. We have been told Mattie married again after Jasper died.
