Melinda Matilda Maxey was born 1810, in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. She was the youngest of nine children born to Hail Maxey and Dicey Craighead.
Melinda married Osborn Wilkes on October 26, 1825, in Oglethorpe County. Osborn Wilkes was born about 1793, in Virginia, the son of Benjamin Wilkes (b. 1762, VA; d. 1809, Oglethorpe Co, GA) and Sarah Osborn (b. 1767, VA; d. 1828, Oglethorpe Co, GA).
The 1830 Oglethorpe County census shows Osborn Wilkes, a male 30-39 (b. 1791-1800), one male under 5 (Aaron) (b. 1826-1830), one female 15-19 (b. 1811-1815), two females 10-14 (1816-1820) and one female under 5 years old (Mary) (b. 1826-1830). The census shows Osborn owned one female slave.
Melinda was mentioned in her father's will, which was signed April 7, 1845, in Oglethorpe County.
The family was living in Troup County, Georgia in 1850. The census shows Osborn Wilkes, 57, a farmer; Malinda M., 44; James A., 15, a farmer; Wm O., 14; Joseph H., 12; Charity S., 8; Dicey M., 8; James H., 6 and Ezekiel, 2 years old.
The 1860 Heard County, Georgia census shows Osborn Wilkes, 70, farmer; Melinda M., 50; Dicy M., 17; Charity S., 17; James H., 15 and Hezekiah H., 14 years old.
The 1870 Carroll County, Georgia census shows Osburn Wilkes, 79, a cooper; Melinda, 65 and Dicey, 25 years old.
The 1880 Cleburne County, Alabama census shows Ausburn Wilks, 92 and wife Malinda, 74, living in Shoal Creek Township. Living next door to them was their son James Wilkes and his family.
Osborn died December 9, 1880, in Cleburne County, Alabama. Melinda died there on August 31, 1881.

1. Aaron Hail Wilkes was born about 1827, in Oglethrope Co, GA. He was mentioned in his grandfather's will, which was signed on Apr 7, 1845, in Oglethorpe Co. The will stated that the balance of Hail Maxey's estate, after payment of his debts, was to be sold and the proceeds equally divided between grandchildren Aaron H. Wilkes and Martha Mahala Ann Connel. Aaron married his 1st cousin, Martha Mahala Ann Connel on May 14, 1846, in Oglethorpe Co. Martha Connel was born 1830, in Clarke Co, GA, the daughter of Benjamin Green Connel and Nancy Maxey (Melinda's sister). Aaron and Martha appear on the 1850 Oglethorpe Co, GA census and the 1870 and 1880 Jackson Co, GA census. Melinda died after 1880, in Jackson Co, GA. The 1900 Jackson Co census shows Aaron, 70, widowed, living with son Thomas and family. The 1910 Jackson Co census shows Aaron, 82, widowed, living with daughter Mary Hutchins and family. Aaron died Feb 12, 1912, in Jackson Co, GA.
2. Mary S. Wilkes was born about 1829, in Oglethorpe Co, GA. She married James Terrell Mullenix on Sept 7, 1845, in Troup Co, GA. James Mullenix was born about 1819, in SC. Mary died 1880-1900, in Carroll Co, GA. James died there on Feb 16, 1906.
