Melissa McClure was born
about 1837, in Arkansas, possibly in Searcy County. She may have been
a twin to Valentine. She was the daughter of Stephen McClure
and Sarah Smith.

She is listed as a female under the age of five years. Melissa's
father purchased land in 1849, near Quitman in Benton Township of
Conway County and moved his family there from the Greenbrier area.
The 1850 Conway County census,
Benton Township, Quitman Post Office, shows Melissa, age 14, living
at home with her family. The 1860 Conway County census shows Melissa,
age 24, still single and living at home in Benton Township, Quitman
Post Office.
