Mary J. Cargile

Mary J. Cargile was born June 30, 1842, in Searcy County, Arkansas.  She was the third of at least eight children born to Nenion Elijah Cargile and Sarah Johnson.

Mary's family moved from Searcy County to Conway County, Arkansas about 1844. 

Mary, age 9, appears on the 1850 Conway County, Benton Township census with her parents and siblings.  

Mary married William A. Elliott, Jr. on December 30, 1858, in Conway County, Arkansas. The marriage was performed by James M. Scarlett, a Methodist Protestant minister.

William A. Elliott, Jr. was born April 26, 1841, in Tennessee.  He was the son of William A. Elliott, Sr. and Mary Graves. 

William Elliott, Sr. was born about 1804, in North Carolina and died about 1851-1858, probably in Conway County, Arkansas.  Mary Graves was born about 1804, in Virginia and died from flux in early 1860, in Conway County.  Their children included Elizabeth F. Elliott, born about 1830, in Tennessee; Mary Elliott, born about 1832, in Tennessee; Sarah J. Elliott, born about 1834, in Tennessee and William A. Elliott, Jr., born 1841, in Tennessee.   The 1850 Haywood County, Tennessee census, 10th District, shows William A. Elliott, 46, farmer; Mary, 46; Sarah, 16; Elizabeth, 20; Mary, 18 and William, 14 years old.

William, Jr. and Mary (Cargile) settled near Quitman in Conway County after their marriage.  

The 1860 Conway County, Benton Township census shows William A., 24, a farmer; Mary, 19 and Ara A., seven months old.  Living with the family were William's sisters, Elizabeth Elliott, 30, and Sarah J. Elliott, 26.  The census shows William had real property valued at $300 and personal property valued at $150. Living nearby were Mary's uncles, D. B. and William W. Cargile, and their families.  (Note: Elizabeth F. Elliott, 30, married William J. Hoggard, 27, on December 30, 1860, in Conway County.)

William was a private in Co. F of the 36th Arkansas Confederate Infantry in the Civil War.  He was killed in the Battle of Petersburg, Virginia on June 18, 1864. 

Mary married Alexander K. Livingston on August 7, 1865, in Conway County.

Alexander Livingston was born November 30, 1833, in Alabama.  He was the son of Joseph Livingston (b. abt 1790, VA; d. abt 1838) and Elizabeth (last name unknown) (b. abt 1795, TN; d. 1851-1858, Conway Co, AR). 

This was a second marriage for Alex Livingston, too.  He first married Lucinda Lewis on April 5, 1855, in Conway County.  Lucinda died about 1862-1865, in Arkansas.  Alex and Lucinda's children included: (1)  P. C. Livingston (female), b. abt 1856, AR; d. 1862-1868; (2) Ruben Andrew Livingston, b. 1857, LA; (3) Hannah Dorcus Livingston, b. abt 1858, LA; (4) Nancy Livingston, b. abt 1861, AR and (5) James A. Livingston, b. abt 1862, AR. 

The 1870 Conway County census, Benton Township, shows A. K. Livingston, 35, a farmer; Mary, 28; Rubin, 12; Dorcus, 11; Adena, 11; Nancy, 9; James, 7; Minerva, 5 and Johnette, 3 years old. Alex's real property was valued at $400 and his personal property valued at $500.  Mary's father, Nenion E. Cargile and some of her siblings were living in the next household.

Mary and Alex moved their family to Texas about 1875.  

The 1880 Stephens County, Texas census shows Allic Levingston, 46, a farmer; Mary, wife, 38; Darcus, daughter, 22; Jimmie A., son, 18, laborer; Bella I., daughter, 13; Johneta E., daughter, 12; Sarah E., daughter, 10; Mary Kelley, daughter, 8; Thomas, son, 6 and George, son, 4 years old.

Alexander Livingston died June 1883, in Erath County, Texas. 

The 1900 Erath County, Texas census shows Mary J. Livingston, 42, born June 1842, widowed and John D., son, 17, born June 1882. 

Mary died May 9, 1904, at Huckabay, Erath County, Texas.  She is buried in the Huckabay Cemetery.
