Nancy Maxey was born about 1806, in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. She was the daughter of Hail Maxey and Dicey Craighead.
Nancy married Benjamin Green Connel on April 8, 1824, in Oglethorpe County. Benjamin Connel was born about 1805, in Virginia. He was the son of John Connel (b. 1785, Guilford Co, NC; d. 1878, KY) and Elizabeth Turner (b. 1775, Mass.; d. 1840, MO).
The family appeared on the 1830 Morgan County, Georgia census. The census shows Green Connell, a male 20-29 (b. 1801-1810), two males under 5 (b. 1826-1830), one female 20-29 (b. 1801-1810) and one female under 5 (b. 1826-1830).
The family appeared on the 1840 Clarke County, Georgia census. The census shows Green Connel, a male 30-39 (b. 1801-1810), two males 10-14 (b. 1826-1830), one male 5-9 (b. 1831-1835), one male under 5 (b. 1836-1840), one female 30-39 (b. 1801-1810), one female 10-14 (b. 1826-1830), one female 5-9 (b. 1831-1835) and two females under 5 (b. 1836-1840).
Census indicates Nancy gave birth to a son in late 1844, or early 1845. We believe she died in childbirth at that time. Nancy's father signed his will on April 7, 1845, in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. The will mentions "the heirs of my deceased daughter Nancy Connel ", so we know that Nancy died prior to April 7, 1845.
Green appears with his younger children on the 1850 Clarke County census. The census shows Benj G. Connell, 45, farmer; Nancy, 27; Hartwell, 14; Orra, 12; Carey, 10; Lotty, 8; Foster, 7; Billymire, 5 and Denny, 2, (female). Since "the heirs of my deceased daughter Nancy Connel" was mentioned on April 7, 1845, we know that the ages of the children on the census were wrong or that this was not Nancy's daughter. It is possible Denny belonged to Nancy's daughter, Nancy, age 27 on the census.
We believe Green died between about 1851 and 1859, probably in Clarke County. We found part of his children on the 1860 Clarke County census. It seems the majority of his family disappeared between 1851 and 1859. We believe several of the younger children may have died during that period.
