Peter Abel

Peter Abel was born February 20, 1788, in Montgomery (now Wythe) County, Virginia.    He was the son of Lewis Henry Abel and Elizabeth Wampler.

Peter married Naomi Amy Ward on February 16, 1815, in Knox County, Tennessee.    Naomi Ward was born about 1794, in North Carolina, according to census.

Peter moved his family to Monroe County, Indiana just prior to 1820.

The 1820 Monroe County, Indiana census shows Peter Abel, a male 26-44; one male 16-25; two males under 10; and one female (Naomi) 16-25 years of age.

The 1830 Monroe County census shows Peter Abel, a male 40-49; one male 10-14; one male 5-9; one male under 5; one female 20-29; one female 15-19; one female 5-9; and one female under the age of 5 years.    (Note: While the census shows six children, our records show that Peter only had three children born by 1830.    Either we do not have record of all of Peter's children, or the other children shown on the census were relative who were living with Peter's family at that time.)

The 1840 Monroe County census shows Peter Abel, a male 50-59; two males 20-29; two males 15-19; one male 10-14; one male 5-9; one female 40-49 (Naomi); and two females 5-9 years of age.    (Note: While the census shows 8 children, we have record of only 6 children born to Peter and Naomi.)

By 1850, half of Peter's children had married and left home.    The 1850 Monroe County census shows Peter Able, 61, a farmer, $3000 real property; Naomi, 56; Nancy, 19; Peggy, 18; and Elias, 16, a farmer.   Living with the family was Naomi's mother, Winney Ward, 75, born in North Carolina.    Listed next to Peter on the census was his son Ruben Able, 23, a farmer; Ruben's wife, Mary, 20; and son James, 1 year old.

Noami died between 1851 and early 1855, in Monroe County, Indiana.

Peter married Rebecca Eveline Smith on November 13, 1855, in Monroe County.    Census shows Rebecca was born about 1816, in North Carolina.

The 1860 Monroe County census shows Peter Abel, 71, a farmer, $3000 real property, $500 personal property; Rebecca Evelin, 44; and Wm, 44, a laborer.    Living very near-by was Peter's daughter-in-law and her family.    The census shows Mary A. Abel, 30, $245 pers prop; James M., 11; and Nancy M., 8 years of age.    Listed next to Mary Abel on the census was another of Peter's daughter-in-laws, Martha J. Abel, 22, $345 pers prop; and Naomi C., 3 years old.    Mary had married Peter's son, Ruben, and Martha had married his son Elias.   We believe Mary and Martha were both widowed.    We did not locate Ruben or Elias after 1850.

Peter died in Monroe County, Indiana, on April 9, 1864.
