Rebecca Jane Holden

Rebecca Jane Holden was born about 1826, in Wayne County, Tennessee. She was the eldest of eight children born to Archibald Holden and Jemima (last name unknown).

Jane's family appears on the 1830 Wayne County, Tennessee, census. She is listed as a female under the age of 5 years.

The family lived in Tennessee until around 1840, when they moved to Mississippi for a short time. About 1845 to 1849 Jane's family moved to Jackson County, Arkansas.

 The Holden family appears on the 1850 Jackson County census in Cache Township. Jane is shown to be 24 years old.

Rebecca Jane married Henry Roberts about 1854, probably in Izard County, Arkansas.  Henry Roberts was born about 1838, in Arkansas.

Henry and Jane appear on the 1860 Izard County census, in Sylamore Township. The census shows Henry Roberts, 22, a farmer; Rebecca, 26; Wm. J., 5, and James G., 2 years old.  The family was living near the James S. George, Archibald Holden and Richard Holden families.

Henry fought in the Civil War in the Confederate Army.  He was in Co. F, 21st Arkansas Infantry.   Henry Roberts died of measles in February 1863, while stationed at Ft. Smith, Arkansas, during the War.

Jane appears on the 1870 Izard County census in Clay Township, Lunenburg Post Office, living with the Benjamin Woods family. Her two sons, William, age 13, and Archer, age 9, appear on the census with them.

The 1880 Stone County, Arkansas, census, Sylamore Township, shows Jane Roberts, head, 47, born in Tennessee; William Roberts, son, 23, born in Arkansas; Mahala Williams, sister, 34, widowed, born in Arkansas; Louis George, nephew, 7, born in Arkansas; Aaron Holden, brother, 11, born in Arkansas and Charley Williams, nephew, 2, born in Arkansas.

 Jane filed an application for a Confederate Civil War widow's pension in April 1892, in Stone County.

The 1900 Stone County census, Sylamore Township, shows William Roberts, head, 46, born June 1854, in Arkansas, single, a farmer and Rebecca Roberts, mother, 77, born July 1823, in Tennessee, widowed.

We have been told that Jane died about 1905, in Stone County, and is buried in an unmarked grave in Big Springs Cemetery near Timbo, in Stone County.
