Rosa Virginia Jones

Rosa Virginia Jones was born August 30, 1888, probably in Faulkner County, Arkansas.   (Note: Her obituary states she was born at Quitman, in Cleburne County, Arkansas.)     Rosa was the daughter of Dockery Berry Giddens Jones and his third wife, Samantha Paralee Edwards.

Rosa's family settled in White County, Arkansas prior to 1889, and moved to Van Buren County, Arkansas, prior to 1900. They settled in Culpepper Township in Van Buren County.

Rosa appears with her family on the 1910 Van Buren County census.    She was listed as 20 years old.    Her son, Ralph, age 6, appears on the census with Rosa and his grandparents. 

Rosa married Charles F. "Charlie" Lay on October 8, 1910, in Van Buren County.   Charlie Lay was born in 1845, in Arkansas, the son of Jesse Lay and Susan (maiden name unknown).    He was 43 years older than Rosa.   Charlie had been married prior to his marriage to Rosa.   Charlie and his first wife, Sallie Elington, had several children including: (1) Lula Lay, b. 1868, (2) Hattie Lay, b. 1874, (3) Jesse Lay, b. 1877, (4) Robert Lay, b. 1883 and (5) Lucian Lay, b. 1888.   

Charlie and Rosa moved their family to Oklahoma about 1913.  

The family appears on the 1920 Haskell County, Oklahoma census in the Town of Keota.   The census shows C. F. Lay, 75, a day laborer; Rosa V., wife, 30; Ralph, son, 14; Lindon, son, 9 and Ila Irene, daughter, 7 years old.     Living next to them were Rosa's parents, Berry and Samantha Jones.   

Charlie Lay died before 1930, in Oklahoma.    The 1930 Osage County, Oklahoma census shows Rosa V. Lay, 42, widowed.

 Rosa died March 27, 1962, at Pawhuska, Oklahoma and is buried in Ethel Reese Cemetery near Barnsdall, Oklahoma.
