(My sincere thanks to Ken Houp for the following information.)
Sarah Ann Abel was born in 1817, in Knox County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of John David Abel and Ann Harner.
Sarah married Edmund Houpt on November 1, 1840.
Sarah died April 1848, in Tennessee, probably in Bledsoe County, from complications with childbirth.
Ken Houp, a descendant of Sarah and Edmund, gives the following information, "From letters written by Edmund to his brother Thomas Houpt, which I possess, Edmund writes his brother to inform him of the death of Sarah Ann in April 1848 from complications with childbirth. The child died also. She left three living children, although one died at age eight in Tennessee, leaving my gg grandfather, Robert David Houpt...and Rachael. One lived with Grandpa Hinds and one with the Abels. Edmund brought the two children and came to Kentucky in about 1852. He remarried and had eight more children."
Ken adds the following information, "Both Edmund and Robert fought in the Civil War for the Eighth Kentucky Infantry (Union). Edmund was captured by the Confederates at the battle of Stones River in 1862 and was marched to prison in Annapolis, Maryland. Sarah Ann's son, Robert David, was wounded at Chickamauga and lived to be 96. He lived long enough to see Gone With The Wind. Edmund and Robert settle din Jessamine County, Kentucky at High Bridge. Edmund was murdered in 1902 for his money by his oldest son, Deacter Houp, by his Kentucky marriage to Zana Hensley. The "t" got dropped off the Houpt name when they received their Civil War pensions."
