Sarah Maxey

Sarah Maxey was born September 30, 1793, in Franklin County, Virginia, the daughter of Hail Maxey and Dicey Craighead.

     Sarah's family moved to Georgia about 1801, settling in Oglethorpe County.

     Sarah married Amos Shaw on June 25, 1812, in Oglethorpe County.   Amos Shaw was born December 18, 1789, in Greene County, Georgia.  He was the son of John Shaw and Mary Waggoner

John Shaw was born January 29, 1763, in Baltimore, Maryland and died January 1848, in Greene County, Georgia.   Mary Waggoner was born 1768, in South Carolina and died May 5, 1851, in Greene County, Georgia.

     Amos and Sarah raised their family in Oglethorpe County.

     The 1820 Oglethorpe County census, Lexington Dist, shows Amos Shaw, a male 26-44 (b. 1776-1794), three males under 10 (b. 1811-1820), one female 16-25 (b. 1795-1804) and one female under 10 (b. 1811-1820).   Amos owned 5 female slaves.

     In 1821, Amos bought 184 acres on Falling Creek, in Oglethorpe County, from his father-in-law, Hail Maxey

      The 1830 Oglethorpe County census, Capt. Hall's Dist, shows Amos Shaw, a male 40-49 (b. 1781-1790), three males 10-14 (b. 1816-1820), three males 5-9 (b. 1821-1825), one male under 5 (b. 1826-1830), one female 40-49 (b. 1781-1790), two females 5-9 (b. 1821-1825) and one female under 5 (b. 1826-1830).   Amos was listed with one male slave.

     Prior to 1840, the family moved from Oglethorpe County to Troup County, Georgia.   The 1840 Troup County, Georgia census shows Amos Shaw, a male 50-59 (b. 1781-1790), two males 15-19 (b. 1821-1825), one male 10-14 (b. 1826-1830), one female 30-39 (b. 1801-1810), one female 15-19 (b. 1821-1825), one female 10-14 (b. 1826-1830) and one female 5-9 (b. 1831-1835). 

     The family relocated again prior to 1850, at which time they appear on the 1850 Walker County, Georgia census.   The census shows Amos Shaw, 63, farmer, $2800 real property; Sarah, 56 and Elizabeth J., 27 years old.   Living next to them was their son Jessie M. Shaw, 26, farmer, $800 real property; Mary, 20 and Nancy E., 2 years old.

     Amos died August 20, 1859, at McLemores Cove, in Walker County, Georgia.

     The 1860 Walker County census shows Sarah living along in Upper Cove Township, Cedar Grove Post Office.   The census shows Sarah Shaw, 65, $5000 real prop, $2000 personal property. 

     On the 1870 Walker County census, Subdivision 128, Fricks Gap Post Office, Sarah was living with her son William Shaw and his family.   The census shows Sarah Shaw, 75 years old.  

     Sarah died between 1871 and 1879, in Walker County.

1. Henry B. Shaw was born Oct 17, 1813, in Oglethorpe Co, GA.   He married Nancy Hampton on Dec 21, 1837, in Troup Co, GA.   Nancy Hampton was born Sept 14, 1817, in GA and died Feb 11, 1870.   Henry died March 3, 1888, in Ellis Co, TX. 

2. Ava B. Shaw was born Nov 28, 1814, in Oglethorpe Co, GA and died seven months later on July 2, 1815, in Oglethorpe Co. 

3. Stephen Shaw was born Feb 15, 1816, in Oglethorpe Co, GA.   He married Sarah A. Hammond on Dec 31, 1839, in Muscogee Co, GA.    Stephen died Jan 1861, in SC.

4. Susan Ann Shaw was born Mar 31, 1818, in Oglethorpe Co, GA.   She married Allen Holloway on June 11, 1835, in Troup Co, GA.   Allen Holloway was born about 1814, in GA.   Susan died 1883, in Claiborne Co, LA.

5. George W. Shaw was born Oct 2, 1819, in Oglethorpe Co, GA.   He married Elizabeth Ann "Eliza" Bridgeman on July 18, 1839, in Troup Co, GA.    Elizabeth Bridgeman was born about 1824, in VA.   George died in 1877.

6. William M. Shaw was born July 25, 1821, in Oglethorpe Co, GA.    He married Harriett Hardin on Sept 20, 1843, in Greene Co, GA.    Harriett Hardin was born Feb 24, 1824, in GA.   William was a preacher.   He died Dec 14, 1890, in Walker Co, GA.

7. Elizabeth Jane Shaw was born Apr 21, 1823, in Oglethorpe Co, GA.   She married William Thomas Beckham.   William Beckham was born May 12, 1822, in TN.   Jane died about 1861, in Dade Co, GA. 

8. Jessie Mercer Shaw was born June 30, 1824, in Oglethorpe Co, GA.   He married Mary Camp on Nov 18, 1847, in GA.   Mary Camp was born about 1831 and died in 1881, in GA.   Jessie died Mar 21, 1903, in Walker Co, GA.

9. John Newton "Jack" Shaw was born June 20, 1826, in Oglethorpe Co, GA.   He married Rebecca Ann Jackson on Sept 30, 1846, in GA.   Rebecca Jackson was born about 1827, in GA.   John died Mar 30, 1869, in Pulaski Co, AR.

10. Sarah M. Shaw was born Mar 2, 1828, in Oglethorpe Co, GA.   She married William H. Hardin about 1848, in GA.   William Hardin was born about 1826, in Walton Co, GA and died after 1880, in Walker Co, GA.   They divorced about 1855.  Sarah married Joel A. Fowler on Nov 30, 1856, in Walker Co, GA.   Joel Fowler was born Sept 8, 1823, in Laurens Co, SC and died Jan 21, 1894, in Walker Co.    Sarah died Mar 15, 1901, in Walker Co. 

11. Louisa Frances Shaw was born Feb 28, 1831, in Oglethorpe Co, GA.   She married William Satterwhite about 1849, in GA.   William Satterwhite was born 1827, in GA.   Louisa died prior to 1879, in AR.   William died Jan 25, 1898, in AR.
