Susanna E. Branham was born April 3, 1834. Census records all show she was born in Tennessee. Susanna was the daughter of William Branham and Arenna R. (last name unknown).
Susanna appears on the 1840 Blount County, Alabama, census with her family. The census shows her as a female 5-10 years old.
Susanna attended the United Baptist Church of Christ at Mt. Pisgah, Chepultepec (now called Allgood), in Blount County. Church records show that on Monday, September 17, 1849 (probably at a revival service) "after a divine service the door of the church was opened....and then came forward Sister Susanah Branham and joined by an exp of grace and was recd and bapt." Her sister Frances also joined the church and was baptized at that time, according to church records.
The 1850 Blount County census listed her as Susan, age 17, single and living at home with her parents and siblings.
Susanna appears in the records of the United Baptist Church of Christ at Mt. Pisgah again in September 1853. The record shows that "the church took up a charge against Sister Susan Branham for joining the Methodist and excluded her."
Susanna married Oliver T. Hill on April 15, 1855, in Blount County.
Oliver Hill was born about 1827, in Kentucky, according to census records. We found an Oliver Hill, 21, on the 1850 Harrison County, Kentucky census. He was listed with Agnes Hill, 44, born in Kentucky and William Hill, 6, also born in Kentucky. This may have been Oliver's mother and younger sibling. Several other Hill families were living on either side of Oliver and were probably all closely related. We can not verify that this is the Oliver Hill that Susanna married, however.
On March 1, 1858, Oliver (listed as Boliver on the land document) was granted a land patent on 80 acres of land adjacent to land owned by William Branham in Blount County. The property was described as the W ½ of the SE qtr. of Sect. 30, T13, R2E, containing 80 acres and 19/100 of an acre. Oliver was a farmer.
Oliver and Susanna appear on the 1860 Blount County census, living next door to her sister, Jane H. Farley, and near her parents, William and Arenna. The census shows Oliver T. Hill, 33, owned personal property valued at $150, a farm laborer; Susanna, 26; James F. M., age 3 and Henry J. B., 10 months old.
We believe that Oliver and Susanna remained in Alabama when her father William Branham moved his family to Arkansas in the early 1860's. The 1870 census show that two children were born to Oliver and Susanna between 1863 and 1865 in Alabama.
The 1870 Blount County, Alabama census shows Susan Hill, 36, with personal property valued at $75; son Marion, 14; son J. A., 11; son John, 7; and son W. G. D., 5 years old. The census shows that all four of the children were born in Alabama. We did not locate Oliver Hill in 1870. He may have died during the Civil War, or the couple may have divorced.
We have been unable to locate Susanna or any members of her family after the 1870 census.
