Thomas Jefferson Cypert was born about 1828, in Wayne County, Tennessee, the son of John William Cypert and Nancy Anderson.
Thomas married Elizabeth J. Hayes about 1846, in Wayne County. Thomas and his family remained in Tennessee, when his parents and most of the rest of his family moved to Arkansas in the fall of 1851.
Thomas and Elizabeth had one child. Elizabeth died about 1852, in Wayne County.
Thomas married Elizabeth Robertson about 1852, in Wayne County. We believe four children were born to this union.
Thomas served as a Captain in the Union Army in Co A, 2nd Tennessee Mounted Infantry during the Civil War. He was captured by the Confederates and taken to Sheffield, Alabama, to be executed. He escaped, however and made his way back home.
Thomas married Mrs. Mary (Robertson) Holt on March 10, 1867, in Wayne County. Mary Robertson Holt was a sister to Thomas' second wife, Elizabeth Robertson. We believe that Thomas and Mary had six children.
The 1870 Wayne County, Tennessee census, 8th Civil District, shows Thomas Cypert, 42, a farmer with $8000 real property and $2000 personal property; Mary A., 36; Mary A. 15; F. J., 13, a farm laborer; Henry L., 10; Mary N. E., 7; Thomas R., 4; and Sarah F., 2 years old.
The 1880 Wayne County census, 10th Civil District, shows T. J. Cypert, 52, a lawyer; M. A., wife, 42; M. F., son, 22; H. L., son, 18; Mary, daughter, 16; T. J., son, 14; S. F., daughter, 12; F. M., son, 10; N. A., daughter, 8; Ada, daughter, 6; and E. A., daughter, 3 years old.
Census indicates that Thomas was a lawyer. We have been told that he also served as a Tennessee State Senator and was a Baptist minister.
Thomas died in Wayne County. He is buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, on Cypress Creek in Wayne County.
