William Carroll Cypert was born February 10, 1815, in Warren County, Tennessee, the son of Jesse Newton Cypert and Jemima Worthen.
It is said that William was named for General William Carroll, commanding officer at the Battle of New Orleans, a man William's father greatly admired.
William married Rebecca Lawson on January 24, 1833, in Wayne County, Tennessee.
William served three terms as governor of Tennessee. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in the Civil War. William was captured by the Yankees and died in 1864, in Alton, Illinois, a prisoner of the Union Army.
