William Maxey

William Maxey was born April 14, 1791, in Franklin County, Virginia.   He was the eldest of at least nine children born to Hail Maxey and Dicey Craighead.

William's family migrated to Georgia about 1801, settling in Oglethorpe County.

Bounty land records show that William enlisted on August 23, 1813 and served until March 11, 1814, as a Private in Capt. William Owen's Company, 2nd Georgia Militia in the Creek Indian War.

William's name appeared on the tax digests of Oglethorpe County, Georgia from 1814 through 1818.

William married Nancy Needham DeGraffenreid on June 9, 1815 in Greene County, Georgia. Nancy was born January 23, 1792, in Virginia, the daughter of Vincent Monroe DeGraffenreid and Martha Green Thaxton.   (Note: Nancy's brother, William Baker DeGraffenreid, married William's sister, Elizabeth Maxey.)

Vincent DeGraffenreid was born 1763, in Lunenburg County, Virginia and died May 13, 1834, in Christian County, Kentucky.   Martha Thaxton was born about 1771, in Virginia and died between 1851 and 1858, probably in Missouri.   The DeGraffenreid family traces its roots back to the early 1600's in Bern, Switzerland, immigrating to America prior to 1700.

William and Nancy were in Kentucky in 1818, when their eldest child was born.

William and Nancy moved their family to Tennessee prior to November 1819.  They appear on the 1820 Williamson County census, living in Franklin Township near the families of Vincent DeGraffenreid and John DeGraffenreid.

On June 16, 1820, William served as a bondsman for the marriage of his brother Stephen in Williamson County.

Their son, Stephen, was said to have been born December 31, 1829, in Tennessee.   The family moved to Kentucky early in 1830.   The family appears on the 1830 Trigg County, Kentucky census, which was taken about June.    His oldest son, William G., married in Trigg County in 1838.

Just prior to 1840, William and his family moved to Missouri, where they appear on the Polk County census.     Their daughter Martha Jane married in 1841, in Polk County.   William's family was living in Center Creek Township of Jasper County, Missouri in 1842.

The family appears on the 1850 Jasper County census, in District 41.  The census shows William, 59, a farmer; Nancy, 58; Stephenson, 20, a farmer, b. TN; Bennett N., 18, a farmer, b. KY; John C., 30, farmer, b. TN and Katharine, 24, b. TN.    Listed next to William was his son William G. Maxey, 32, blacksmith, b. KY; Elizabeth, 24, b. NC; Susannah, 6, b. MO and James L., 4, b. MO.

Nancy died prior to 1857, in Jasper County, Missouri.   William died there in 1857.
