William L. "Billy Gay" Sypert was born in 1790, in Chatham County, North Carolina, the son of Thomas Sypert and Mary Lassater.
The Sypert family moved to Wilson County, Tennessee between about 1751 and 1754.
Billy fought in the Battle of 1812, as did his brother Lawrence. He was wounded in the head at the Battle of New Orleans in 1812.
Billy was married three times. He first married Patsy Dew on December 14, 1814, in Wilson County. His second wife was Nannie Lambreth. His third wife was Susannah Spaden. We are unsure which wife(s) his children belonged to.
Billy attended Cumberland University, Law School, as did his brother, Lawrence. Billy practiced law in Lebanon in Wilson County.
