(Information contributed by Patsy Fouts.) Willis Moses Stanfield was born May 1832, in Georgia, the son of Robert J. Stanfield and Bethena Meyers Waggoner.
Willis married Martha J. Sullivan about 1855. Martha Sullivan was born December 5, 1834, in Georgia.
The family appears on the 1860 Gordon County, Georgia census. The census shows Willis, Martha, and Sarah E, age one year. Living with the family was 21 year old Benjamin F. Stanfield.
Willis enlisted in the Confederate Army on May 12, 1862, at Calhoun, Gordon County, Georgia. He was in Company G, 3rd Regiment of the Georgia Cavalry. He was listed as missing in battle at Munfordville, Kentucky on September 21, 1862. He was taken Prisoner of War and held at Military Prison at Louisville, Kentucky. He was paroled at Green River Hospital near Munfordville, Kentucky on September 23, 1862.
The 1900 Etowah County, Alabama census shows Willis was a farmer and that Martha had given birth to 8 children, but only 6 were still living.
Willis applied for his Civil War pension on June 14, 1901. He died October 13, 1903 in Etowah County, Alabama.
Martha applied for a widows pension on July 7, 1904. She died July 14, 1910 in Etowah County.
