George William Wesley Horton was born December 25, 1844, in Tennessee, the son of William Melvin Horton and Rahcel Thornton.
George was a Private in Co. B, 2nd Tennessee Infantry in the Civil War. He enlisted October 15, 1863, at Nashville, Tennessee, and was discharged on October 17, 1864, at Nashville.
George married Elizabeth "Betsey" Jane Wright on Januray 26, 1865, in Tennessee. Betsey Jane Wright was born October 11, 1844, in Lawrence County, Tennessee, the daughter of William Bunyun Wright and Mary Ann Martin.
George re-enlisted in the Army on March 1, 1865, at Nashville, as a Private in Co. E, 8th Tennessee Infantry. He was discharged September 1, 1865, at Nashville. His military papers describe him as 5' 6" tall, with fair complexion, sandy hair and blue eyes.
The 1870 Wayne County, Tennessee census, 8th Civil District, shows G. W. Horton, 25, a farer; Elizabeth J., 25; James W., 4; and Samuel A., 1 year old.
George Horton died November 20, 1918, at Lutts, in Wayne County. Betsey Jane died June 27, 1919. They are both buried in Cromwell Crossroads Cemetery in Wayne County.
